What do you pay for a Post Office Box???

We paid something like $25/year for our post office box back east and it is over DOUBLE that out here in Idaho...and the bad part is that we don't have a choice. We have to have the PO Box b/c they will not deliver to our houses in town. The fee went up to $52 this year! What do you guys/gals pay???

    According to Postal regulations, if you don't have the option for home or rural delivery, then they can't charge you box rent. Otherwise it's $25 a year here.

    4.2 Basic Information for Post Office Box Service
    4.2.1 Purpose
    Post office box service is a premium service offered for a fee to any customer requiring more than free carrier delivery or general delivery and for no fee to customers who are not eligible for carrier delivery. The service allows a customer to obtain mail during the hours the box lobby is open or access is otherwise available. Post office box service is provided only through receptacles owned or operated by the USPS or its agents. Post office box service does not include alternate means of delivery established to replace, simplify, or extend carrier delivery service. A postmaster and a box customer may not make any agreement that contravenes the regulations on post office box service or its fees.

    Thanks Pa! That is exactly what I needed...we'll be raising some issues with the post office now...

    ECC: PLEASE!! Keep us up-to-date with your dealings with the USPS. I live in a non-delivery area (mountains-upstate NY). And I/we? would surely love to find out. Been blindly paying for a box for years. Thanks for your future postings on this issue. Joe

    I know of at least 3 towns close to me, that get boxes for free, because they do not deliver there. I'm not in one of them, I have to pay for my P.O. box. Security is why I have a box. Have had problems with past carriers.

    Let us know what they say.

    $35 bucks year. I have one only because a mailbox would give away a residence. My home is not seen from the road or private drive. Privacy is worth it.

    Dont feel bad! In downtown Memphis there is a major postal station with 5 public parking spots. The only close parking spots are in a parking garage that charges a $7.00 minimum. And alot of people actually pay it! The USPS is a ripoff.

    Update: to all....my mom went to the post office two years ago and raised a stink. (Actually she asked politely). And they immediately allowed her to keep her PO Box for free evermore.

    She (my mom) said the postal clerk didn't bat an eye, simply signed my mom over to Category "E". I felt good that she took the initiative. She didn't tell me, though. All's well that ends well!!!
