Jack Daniels
They may have to stop whiskey production due to the natural spring that is on their property, where they get their water is drying up. Unless the level comes back to normal production will stop. Bad news for those that drink the stuff..[:0]

Jack Daniels Drying Up?

Drought conditions can be felt all over the country and locally as well. The drought is also impacting Tennessee, with no signs of letting up and it's hitting businesses right where they make their living.
Jack Daniels water supply is running low and putting the century-plus whiskey business in jeopardy.
Jerry Hamilton is the distillery plant manager for Jack Daniels. He checks the progress of the whiskey being made at the Lynchburg distillery. While doing so he finds a small problem - wasting water.
The water here has become a precious commodity. The water source for the whiskey is a spring flowing through the Jack Daniels property. For more than 140 years this spring, known as Cave Spring, has been the water supply for Jack Daniels. It is one of the most essential parts of the whiskey's recipie.
"Cave Spring as most people know is iron free and because it is iron free, it tends to schew the firmentation just a little bit and allows us to produce Jack Daniels as we know Jack Daniels," Hamilton explained.
But this year there is a problem - that water supply is starting to flow less and less. Hamilton said the drought Tennessee is in is taking a toll on Cave Spring.
"Water flow is down substantially. I would say at least one third to half of what we normally see," Hamilton said.
To the people who make Jack Daniels, all water is not created equal. It takes a special kind to make this whiskey and they say it's only here in this cave. For that reason they have started conserving as much as they can. Using the water only for the whiskey and nothing else and even finding ways to cut back on the amount used in the process.
What will happen if the spring goes dry?
"If we can't use what it takes to make Jack Daniels I suspect we won't make Jack Daniles until we get all the ingredients we need," Hamilton said.
Moore County ironically it is a dry county. You can't buy a drink here, but if this drought continues that term "dry" could take on a whole new meaning.0 -
It is actually on sale this month where I work, we are shipping thousands of cases a week across Maryland. 0 -
Folks better stock the bar! 0 -
Thank goodness I drink Jim Beam!!! 0 -
I am in North Carolina, not too far from Lynchburg, and I can assure you there is a bad drought here. It is rated as "severe."
I am keeping my fingers crossed that my well doesn't go dry.0 -
After they went to 80 proof (instead of the old 86) I feel cheated. Then again I like Wild Turkey even if Froggies own them[:D]. 0 -
It's drying up because for 20 years, I drank all they could produce. While I'm glad I don't drink anymore, and haven't for 19+ years, I will be honest enough to say I can still taste it in my dreams and miss it at some level! I just can't do that any more.[V]
Jack Daniels Whiskey, Smirnoff Vodka, Thorne's Scotch Whiskey, Jose Cuervo Tequila, and Budweiser Beer. I've spent a small fortune on these products, and they lost a fortune when I stopped drinking![^]0 -
Ahhh...Wild Turkey use to be my whiskey of choice but now I can't get over the Jim Beam. Jack seems to sweet to me. 0 -

Yep. The wine and spirits warehouse that I work at no longer carries Jack. Not sure if it's because of this, but it could be.

Would like to compare the assay's of cave pring water to some of the
springs here in the mo. ozarks. But ours may have trace amounts of
iron..and no telling what else.[;)]0 -
But, Evan William's is ok, right? 0 -
The drought in Tennessee is so bad I only have to mow the lawn every other week instead of twice a week. So far i dont see the down side.
I can't figure out why water in Tennessee, where it rains twice a week, even during a "drought" can cost more than water in California, which is basically a desert.
I also dont understand why farmers in Tennessee can't get by on the several feet of rain per year the state gets during a "drought" when they manage to grow crops in Calif. without a lot of rain. It's called irrigation...0 -
I drink Canadian, so no prob[^] 0 -
about jack Daniels going dry???
Dont they keep that tonic in oak barrels for five years? They have always got a few years supply in the barrels. They would not be slowing production or stopping shipments as long as the spring was still flowing. They are still putting new whiskey into barrels and they should have a few years supply after they stopped altogether.
It's clever marketing ploy probably conjured up by The Weather Channel's Heidi Cullen, who is always thinking of ways to make more money off global warming than she makes selling naked pictures of herself on the internet.0 -
Jim Beam, Evan Williams and Wild Turkey (my favorite) are actually bourbons, which is a type of whisky, but much different in charator from Jack Daniels. JD is not bad but their Gentleman Jack is much better and it does not cost all that much more than the standard. 0 -

My older brother ordered a scotch in Tennessee and received a glass of Jack instead. He had to go behind the bar to explain the difference and find the scotch.0 -
aahh... they can run it through an AA spectrometer and it will tell you exactly how much of what minerals and metals are in the water. run it through an HPLC/FID, GC/MS and/or ICP and those will tell you what organic components are in it. there isn't any kind of water on earth you can't duplicate.
it would cost extra to make it, of course.0 -
i'm with hugh on this one, i picture a room of guys at jd, "it works for the oil companies", the price will double by Christmas
you don't base a buisness on 100% flow of a spring anyway0 -
