planned obsolesence...

1 of my 2 batteries for my Sears 19.2 volt drill is bad. I looked up the price for a new one - $59.99. (http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?pid=00911112000&vertical=Sears&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes)

A new drill, which includes 2 batteries, is $99.00 (http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?pid=00911541000&vertical=GIFT&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes)

plus the new drill will come with a new charger, and of course the drill. So no brainer, I guess I just buy a new drill.

Does anyone understand this pricing?

    In the end they've gotten more of your money. Pay 60 for the battery (which is outrageous), or pay 100 for a new drill. The idea is to make you think you're getting a deal, when in fact you've just forked over an extra $40 for something you didn't need in the first place. Either way you're screwed.

    Personally, I find that I am always using a drill near a power outlet. If you're the same way, you might consider just getting a corded drill and forget the batteries altogether.

    We live in a highly-disposable society. It isn't just your drill and battery. There's literally millions of other examples just like it that encourage us to throw things out rather than replace parts.

    Case in point? Inkjet printers.

    I can go to any office supply, computer or mass merchandise store (so, OfficeMax, CompUSA or Wal-mart) and pick up a brand-new inkjet printer for about $35. They come with black cartridges and color cartridges. When the ink runs out, a black cartridge will cost me about $22 and a color will cost me about $29. My solution? I buy a new printer (I'm serious). I save money in the end.

    my 83 4.0 kenmore vac just split its hose so much that it stopped sucking. sooo, i go down to the sears repair shop for a new hose......NLM, they say. no fooling its no longer made. i just want the hose....soooo, cant buy the hose assy, but i can buy the hose sub part for 57.99.
    ehhh, not bad, because its a good va. stronger than kirby, so he rings it up and it comes to 75.99! what? s&h is almost 20 bucks! ok ok...dont panic, if i pick it up at the store, can i get it cheaper?

    vac went in the dumpster today. sad day indeed.[:(]

    I've seen those batteries for $60 for two. Usually around Xmas time, and you've got to be patient and buy them BEFORE you need them.

    i have so much duct tape on the hose, that it is cracking from age! it doesnt flex anymore! and if it does, the tape cracks and dust flies everywhere![:p]

    I bought a DeWalt package deal a year or so, closeout $200. It had 2 18 volt batteries, a skil-type saw, flashlight, and drill/screwdriver. I was working in some water and one battery got killed. I checked the price of a replacement: $90. l just doesn't seem right!!

    Also, I have a 500C HP printer, that the last I knew was working great- but it's been a while since I've been able to use it- just try and find ink cartridges for it!![:(]

    Maybe you can pick up a similar hose from your local farm and home supply store. They usually have a variety of hose in the sprayer dept. You may have to cut off the ends of the old hose and clamp them to the new hose or make new ends with PVC pipe.

    How about cell phone accessories? I've had about seven or eight cell phones and had to buy a new car charger--usually $30--for a stupid piece of wire with a "planned obsoescence" tip.[:(!]

    There is a company named Batteries Plus that will rebuild those cordless drill batteries for 25 bucks. Supposed to do a real good job.
    They are a nationwide chain.

    The same is with camcorder batteries. I hardly ever used the thing, and had to go to circuit city and buy a new one. [:(!][:(!][:(!]



    At least the batteries in pacemakers last at least 5-10 years depending on the model.
