Bragging time

Some of you GBer'smight remember that I have a son who is visually impaired and is a shooter,too. We have modified several types of firearms for his use with fair to good results. Well, he's been wanting an AR 15 type rifle and finally got one for Christmas this year. We've shot it some at 100 yards getting good groups but today I thought we would try something "out there". He's been wanting to pop a coyote but we can't seem to get one inside 100 yards. I have a steel gong 10"x10" set up at 300 meters (330 yards). This afternoon I thought we would see if the new AR would hit it. I fired a couple of rounds with mine to get the wind doped and then we shot 15 rounds through Brad's AR getting 11 solid hits and 4 near misses. This is sitting using a bipod by the way. It is a new level of success for us and he's sold on the rifle.

    The 223 makes a distinct plink on the steel. That is Brad's only feedback that he made a good shot. The other centerfire rifles we have used are all bolt action and are sort of cumbersome to operate with add on sight for the assistant. The semiauto makes it a lot more fun. I put a brass catcher on to save the cases and to prevent hot brass from hitting me in the nose. Got more work to do before we start on prairie dogs but it's looking better.

    The AR is a basic A-2 with a tri-rail on the carry handle. A riser and extra high scope rings mount a 3x pistol scope on the right side of the action above the ejection port. The bolt actions are more elaborate with an offset scopte mount tig welded to a Leupold steel base which puts the assistant sighter mount about 4-5" right of the action port. This is sturdy and accurate but makes loading and bolt operation tedious. We only get one shot while hunting anyway (but that's usually enough). This semiauto makes high power shooting lots more enjoyable. My camera is out of action right now, sorry.
