Who Makes The AR-15 With The AK Gas System?
Saw one advertised awhile back and now can't find it. It is a normal looking AR but it has an AK-style gas piston. Advertised as self-cleaning.
I might like to get an AR rifle but I don't like the way it craps where it eats.

Colt's got one in the works, read about it in a recent Soldier of Fortune. Another similar model in development with the same gas system and a quick change barrel for the folks who use them a lot in the rock & roll mode.0 -

Not really "self-cleaning", as you probably already know, it just allows the excess gas out in front instead of on the bolt and carrier and inside the receiver. This seems to be the reason why we have problems with the current models in the military. I really don't understand why we haven't adopted this system for our military.

You could look long enough and find a SAR4800 in 223 - FAL clone, smaller caliber. Kinda collectable, about 1400 if you find one. Or you can search out a FNC - again, collectable, but closer to 3500 in price.

The rest are simply AR-15 "Styled" rifles ... or Clones

Personally I'm amazed you don't have an AR styled weapon ... are you just put off by the visual of "the way it craps where it eats" or the bad press it received 40+ years ago?
Have you not had need for a rifle/carbine until now? I know that as a LEO, you have options not available to the common citizen ... so if you have had a rifle/carbine, what have you been using? In light of the inherent accuracy and adaptability of configurations available of the AR styled platform why wouldn't a LEO have one in his tool box?
No slam or pot stirring intended ... I was just wondering.
Lastly, I'm sure you are aware of the several different manufacturers coming out with new options, personally I'm very happy with my SiG-556.

When my bother and I would return from the range and he cleaned his Bushmaster back in the early 90's claiming it was required to keep the thing reliable after each shoot, I knew an AR was not for me.
But, except for that I liked the gun.
The South Koreans thought the same thing so took the AR lower, sort of, and added an AK gas system with H&K Ghost Ring sites and presto, all the great things about an AR remained and all the bad things were gone.
The DR-200 Daewoo was banned by Billybob but one can find a few on the GB forum used for the $6-700.00 range and as new still under $1,000.00.
Accurate and reliable they virtually never have to be cleaned.
My first one I ran over 3,000 rounds through it without cleaning as a test to see how long it would take to fowl. I gave up.
In 10K rounds through 2 DR200s I have never had any failure
The biggest (only?) draw back to the DR200 is the barrel is a 1/12 twist meaning it likes 52-55gr bullets and therefore lacks the long range capability of an AR with a 1/9 or 1/7 twist and the heavier bullets.
Still, with its appetite for cheap ammo and all the things I like about an AR and a never have to clean resume I consider it my assault gun and having tried everything else it is still, as some have labeled it, "The best assault gun in the world"

Colt lost exclusive rights to this designation a few years ago in a US federal court case. This term is now legally recognized as a rifle "type", not just a specific Colt model.0 -
Vietnam Vets--correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the original production M-16's originally advertised to the U.S. gov't as "self-cleaning"? Isn't that how M-16's ended up in the hands of soldiers deployed to Vietnam without cleaning kits? I could be wrong. I've been told that. 0 -
The AR needs a powerful slide spring, a proper carrier mounted operating handle that can be kicked open and kicked closed and better access to a jam forward of an open bolt. That half assed takedown required to clear a jam got many a GI bayonetted in Vietnam while trying to clear one.
The ill advised gas system ,while taking the whole rap, is only part of the gun's fundamental weaknesses as an infantry rifle.
Addressing these weaknesses would boost the weight at least a pound or shake the gun to pieces if it weren't reinforced.0 -

I am not sure how true it is or possably was but they say that the gas piston guns are not as accurate due to the type of recoil impulse they put out. Maybe some one who knows more can touch on that but I remeber hearing that.0 -
I know that HK made some prototype AR style rifles with a short stroke gas piston system, I think it was for the SCAR competition. 0 -
The Daewoo is one of the few well biult affordable priced rifles on the market. The gas system is more like the Russian SVT 40 than the AK and the action remains very clean when fireing. The only bad thing on the post ban Daewoos is the thumbhole stock but even it is pretty comfortable once you shoulder the weapon. Another set back for the Daewoo is the twist rate of 1 in 12 wich limits the shooter to 55 grain or less bullets. If shooting heavy bullets was not a must you can fit a Daewoo DR200 with the Ace pistol grip and stock and have an excellent piston operated AR style rifle at a fraction of the cost of a piston operated AR rifle. 0 -
