2000 Ford Extorter

Take it to the mechanic. He changes the fuel pump (in the tank) and replaces the thermostat. I new the thermostat was stuck open and the weather was quiet cold, but I am skeptical this would cause a sudden drop in the mileage two weeks before the fuel pump took a crap.

SO I get it back this week. Drive it around. 1/8 of a tank left and go to fill it up. Mechanic forgot to connct the hoses from the nozzle to the tank.[xx(][xx(][xx(][xx(] 1.3 gallons on the ground before I got it shut off. [xx(][xx(][xx(][xx(]

Mrs. PLaid wants to complain to the mechanic. I think its not that big of a deal. Put on to hose clamps and go back to the gas station. Third generation for the mechanic to be running the garage and my grandfather was probably going there back when THompson Bros was really the brothers. SHe don't like them SHe wants it done faster and know what the bid is going to be upfront.
I tell her it is not always that simple. You don't always know what you are going to find untill you dig into it. As far as taking 5 days to do the job, you just have to deal with it with a small garage with a snow storm in the middle of the week. The important thing is I TRUST THEM. What's a couple of hose clamps and a couple of days.

    Two weeks ago, it sputtered a twice at startup. Not firing too good. SHut it off and it restarts fine. Ran two tanks of high octane. Early this week the Check engine light comes on and the last two tanks were about 15.5 and 16 MPG. Other than that, it starts fine lately and runs smooth. Changed the spark plugs a year ago. Right now it has 125,000 miles.

    Any guess what the problem is?

    Whatever it is, its inherent to Exploders, I too have a 2000 and it plays a similar game. I've had gas mileage fluctuations from 22 mpg down to 12 mpg and its not from changing driving styles. Mine has a little over 100,000.

    Have you tried running injection cleaner ?

    I run a can of Berryman's (in the twist off can) through a tank of fuel every 4,000 miles or so.
    Berryman's has better cleaning chemicals in it than some which just use Iso P alcohol.

    The 2003 we had stalled a couple times, and the cruise control would go in and out, the dealer ended up replacing the computer, glad it was on warranty[:0][xx(]

    Air filter, fuel filter, injection cleaner, all of those might help. I hate to say, you made a mistake by buying a F.O.R.D...

    I'll leave that to you imagination. Got a Chevy with 175,000 miles on it, just had to do minor maintenance on it (knock on wood).

    Also, check your O2 sensors, that may have something to do with it. Take it to your local Auto Zone, run their diagnostic thingy on it, and see what kind of code it throws back at you. That'll help you out.

    Let us know what it says. It could be something simple, or could be something more serious.

    Did you get a tank of bad gas? When was it tuned up last? I would try a tune up and run some injector cleaner though it. A half quart of STP dexon III(sp?) transmission fluid for a full tank of gas works great for injector cleaner. Also clean you mass air flow senor. If you clean it useing denatured alcohol and a lentless q-tip. I find eye shadow applicator works great.

    I had a 2000 Explorer for a campany car, till I got my Vibe. None to soon The Ford was falling apart.

    are you running a K&N air filter?
    have heard that these can cause problem just after you oil filter and oil gets to mass air flow sensor and causes problems.

    What happens is the oil off the filters gets on the metal wires that makes up the sensors. The wires are heated and the air passing around them cools these wires. The sensors then figures how much air is passing though the wires and by reading the temp on the wires and how much they are cooled by the air. More air means a cooler wire. If the wires are dirty or oily it gives a bad reading and adjust fuel mixture incorrectly.

    got one that had 181000 on the ORIGINAL spark plugs no problems until a little help [ ggod will intended I believe ] changing the oil put another engine in it that had 102000 so far so good

    What about problems when it gets cold and can't go into 4wd? A friend has a 2001 that just won't lock into 4wd when it's below 28 degrees, and his problem is that he lives about 3 miles in from the road.

    Id say if you check engine light came on the o2 sensors or the coolant temp sensor.
