Bolt action rifle available in .270 under 350 new?
Was at a pawnshop today and picked up a free magazine, happend to be the mossberg magazine and was reading about there new bolt actions.
Anyhow other than mossberg/savage are there any other bolt actions that come in .270 that I should look at in this price range. I am going to look at the usual suspects but I suspected you guys may have some recommendations I may not think of.
I used to have a Tikka T3 light in .308 and really liked it other than didn't so much like the kick of the .308 in such a light rifle, I now have a 6.8rem spc in my ar so I thought it would be cool to compliment it with a .270 bolt action.

Hrm thanks will have to see if any near me are doing similar, Not sure I want a 700 but I will look into them if theres any in my price range. Think I seen one on the auction side of the site as well however, hard to say if it would go for that low.0 -
I have a friend who has one of those Wally World 700 specials. Doesn't shoot with a flip for some reason! For under $350, I would buy a Savage or Stevens and never look back. 0 -

Look again. If they are those plastic gray 710 models. You would be better off buying a Daisy BB gun. At least with a Daisy you will get something worth taking home.0 -
Les - I'm not for sure what the WM's around you have, but those on clearance around here are definitely 700's. A buddy of mine bought two 7 mm's for $325 each and had a gunsmith convert to them both to 7 mm STW's ($150). He brought one of them by my office yesterday for me to play with. It is in my office now. I personally wouldn't have a 710, but this is most definitely a 700. I am not going to get into a discussion over whether the WM guns are of inferior quality than those sold by gunshops. I believe within two years, it won't make any difference because no WM will be selling guns. As most already know, some have already quit. 0 -

Supposedly, the new 710's have been completely redesigned by Remington...they just started making them again this year.

700 has a nice trigger. Trigger pull from the fator is 5.5 pounds. Right now mine is set at 22 oz.
700 .270 with a plastic stock and a pencil barrel has a lot of kick to it.0 -
The other day, the sporting goods manager at my local Wal*Mart told me she had marked ALL her Remington 710s down to $250. I know it ain't much of a rifle, but it comes with a scope. Cheap enough.
I would have bought them all, but they won't take my tax ID.0 -
Look at the Lagacy built Howa 1500 Lightning, it's a great rifle for the money. 0 -
My local Accusport dealer is closing out a ton of stuff and has brand new Ruger 77s in various calibers for a little over $400. 0 -

I am not nor was saying that they were 700's. I said,"If they are those plastic gray 710 models.."
I know three guys whom owns 710's and two have had the floor plate to break off.
As far as the gray 700's that reminds me of a Winchester Model 70 Super Shadow. I cant say how good the rifles are. For I have yet to handle one much.
As far as what Wally World has to offer. Can't say, For that is one place that I refuse to shop for anything.0 -

When I said that there were 700 Remingtons at wallyworld for 325 bucks...I wasn't speaking of 710's, 489 wizzbangs, or jolly green giants.
They are plain jane, plastic stocked 700 REMINGTON ACTIONS....for 325 bucks, close-outs.0 -
I had a mauser custom in 270 for sale was a real sweet rifle with a 3x9x40 burris scope I almost could not give it away. I really cannot see the consumers point of view. Lets go to wally world and buy a cheap POS plastic stocked rifle for 325.00 or buy a custom made with walnut stock with a excellent scope for 350.00. O yea give me the wally world deal every time. 0 -

However;
For that 350 bucks you mention, One gets the benefit of 75 year old case-hardened metal..tortured into some semblence of a rifle.
The locking shoulders, ALSO being case-hardened, may or may NOT be left orginal..and probably not...in which case, the ham-fisted 'gunsmith' has lapped thru...or nearly so..the 'case'..and every shot will now be one shot nearer to destruction of that rifle.
How do I know that...? A local 'Smith" has had TWO such rifles self-destruct upon firing factory loads..and he STILL refuses to admit that lapping in military lugs is insane...unlike the more modern commercial actions...
Unless extensively worked over, the AVERAGE military action is just so much junk..if you are used to even the average quality of modern actions.
Upon final action work of a military action, they must be sent out to be reheat treated..or you really got nothing.
Left in their original calibers, military weapons are superb examples of function and form.
When we had buckets of military weapons for 10 bucks to chose from..and a commercial rifle was a 100 bucks..converting was often the only way to have a rifle. Today..with a brand new rifle and a converted Mauser (or even stock orginal ) costing the exact same money...I buy new.

Since no one commented about the mossberg i will. Its a hunter's rifle and that is all.
Stevens might be a better route because it is a cheap savage without the accu trigger. But you know with guns you can always get a different one.0
