Mercedes question

I ordered some parts online for the car and found out I bought the wrong stuff! Anyhow the car does not have a model designation on it and I was told it was a 300E, however it is a 300CE I found out.

I ran the VIN on the car and am having trouble finding out exactly what engine I have. DOes anyone here have a reference manual or means to check to see what engine this is? Here is a copy of the VIN.

    I have a chance to buy a 1986 Mercedes 300 SDL. 160,000 miles on the diesel engine. Auto tranny. Shifts smooth. Interior pretty nice, no rips or tears. Starts quick and runs like a top, no smoke. New brakes. A/C blows cold. Radio doesn't work (no biggie). Michelin tires about 50%. I can buy this for $2500. Looking at it to drive for now and pass on to my kid in about 2 years. Any opinions? I don't know anything about MB cars.

    Weve got a 1999 C230 Kompressor. Its got an inline 4 cylinder with a supercharger, its fast, its good on gas, but weve been having trouble the brakes lately, i think its close to 198,000 miles. Really other than a few minor things its been a great car.

    I had a 220D. Real nice car, but even the simple maintenance items such as breaks were real expensive.

    Price sounds about right -- bottom of its depreciation curve -- but as already noted, parts can be expensive.

    I read a Consumer Reports issue a year or so ago where they rated used cars.

    The 300 series from that era (late '80s, early '90s) were ranked as one of the best values. Those years are reliable, built like a tank, have driver's side airbags, etc.

    Bottom line, they are great cars but expensive parts if they break.
    Many parts are only available through the dealer.

    Go for it. Mercedes are built well. Parts are more expensive but if you can do the work yourself it's not too bad. I buy my parts online.

    Surburban: brakes probably Bendix, Bosch, or other generic brand. Not to worry, when it comes time to change the pads. Joe

    An 86 Mercedes with 160,000 miles that I bought for $2500? Why would they think anything? Guess I could drive my wife's $25,000 minivan. [:o)]

    I'm looking for some cheap, dependable, SAFE transportation to eventually give to my kid. Folks at my church (work) can think what they want.

    Make sure to put a timing chain in it every 80,000 and service the tranny regularly (every 30,000). If there is no rust and a decent interior thats a pretty good deal. All my shop works on is the older Mercedes so if you have any questons let me know. Parts are not that expensive and they are easy to work on. If you have any problem finding parts I have almost everything new and used available for that car. My 85 380se has 185,000 miles, 73 220d has 418,000 and just had a 86 300sdl traded in with 511,000 on it.

    Know a guy who has three and one is always down. The oldest one, (I don't know what year) cost him $800.00 for a front brake job. Don't know all they did but it seems high to me.BTW I don't know anything about cars and don't want to.

    We had an 89 560SL. Bought it used and got rid of it at 180,000 miles. The great things about Mercedes of that era is that if you spend the $ 5,000.00 per year for schedule maintenance, the car will last forever.

    Strange enough, if you spend half that on any other car, it too will last forever.

    i only drive pre-96 Benz as a rule, they are less expensive than any other vehicle , for the reasons

    1- well built & over engineered
    2- you won't need any parts, for a long while if looked after.
    3- economical
    4- extreemly reliable
    5- practicle ,basic & comfertable

    just change the filters every 8k miles...they will do 500k no sweat!!

    parts are as cheep as anything do a search for a non-benz part dealer.

    I have an 81 300SD I bought in 1993 that was abused by the previous owner and I had to rebuild the engine and trany.
    The odometer stopped in 1999 at 250,000.
    I bought a Toyota T-100 in 2001 and put the Benz up for sale. Three days of driving the PU and I took the sign off it and still drive it.
    I use as my gun range car and keep everything I need in it but the guns and ammo until range time.
    I haven't washed it in three years and only fix the running gear but it drives so nice and is so strong in protecting me in case of an accident I will drive it into the ground.
    As for maintenance I found it interesting most things cost less to fix than my daughter's Toyota Camry.
    I just adjusted the valves and put a new battery in it the first money since Jan 2002
    When I bought it Consumer Report's listed the 300 SD and D as the most trouble free used car of any they tested.
    Can't speak for the newer ones but this old Panzer will continue to be a gun runner for a while longer.
    I find it funny no matter what car you mention there are experts that swear by them and others that swear at them.
    I am waiting to find a 91 SD with a blown engine I can buy cheap and move this low miles motor and trany to that.
    Hope springs eternal and going on 15 years with this car counts for something, at least to me.
