12 gauge question

I have never shot slugs out of a shotgun. This being said can you shoot slugs out of a modifided choke or do you have to have a slug barrel?????

    Yes you can, either modified or improved cylinder. Never through a full choke.

    I respectfully disagree with Sarge...

    Liability would be tremendous if Sarge were to be correct. Slugs ARE safe to shoot out of any choke in a modern gun designed for smokeless powder.

    Ball projectiles (Solid projectiles) are unsuitable as they will not deform to accommodate a tight choke and may cause tube damage.

    I agree with Sarge partialy & with Nord completely.
    Full choke is safe, however, the more open chokes may prove to be more accurate as most shooters experience.

    if you can shoot worms out of a bb gun, you can shoot slugs out of a shotgun.

    Hunted with a slug gun for my entire deer hunting career. In the early years i shot a speigel 20 with a fixed full worked fine. My unlce used and H&R pump 12 with a fixed full as well it always shot about 6-10 inches to the left. Slug barell is highly needed for more accurate shooting. improved cylinders are just a hair under a rifled.

    The gun club that I shoot at sells a lot of Brenneke shotgun slugs and their staff touts them as being lower in recoil and less destructive to surrounding areas than shot. Also, they're permitted at this indoor range whereas many other shotgun loads are prohibited because of potential damage to the augurs.

    I have a Mossberg 500 12ga straight out of the box, no choke. Can I safely shoot slugs as it is?

    1. Cut open a slug shell. DROP the slug thru the barrel. Yeah, slug is smaller than a full choke. End of argument. (refers to rifled slugs, not sabot. 2. Rifled slugs are hollow= if there WERE an overtight bore, they will squeeze down. If it were not so, there would be a small mountain of blown up shotguns. 3. Best accuracy with a rifled slugs is usually NOT from a full choke barrel, but from a cylinder bore, or modified.

    so can you shoot slugs out of a full choke or not ? i would be shocked if you couldnt do it considering i have never seen a modern shotgun that said anything about it.

    I'm sure there are people who shoot slugs out of a full choke. I wouldn't recommend shooting them out of anything tighter than a modified.

    I've seen a few 12ga Mossbergs, Savages, and H&R shotguns with full choke that were used almost excusivly with slugs that have split. That has been my observation during 30 years in the repair business. Yes a slug is hollow based. Which means the expanding gas expands the base against the open bore of the barrel which is more open than the tight full choke. Now having made those two statements I will say that I would not hesitate to use slugs occasionally in a modern shotgun with a full choke. However I would not plan to feed it a steady diet of slugs.

    Question can you shoot slugs through a full choke. Answer is yes. But if you want to hit what you are aimming at get a slug barrell
