Zombie Survival Inventory Update
We all know that in the coming Zombie Apocalypse, the best equipped will be the most likely to survive. To wit, I consulted the Zombie Survival Guide (hereinafter abbreviated ZSG) to see what author Max Brooks recommends for survival as compared to my current on-hand inventory.
In the section entitled On The Defense, he counsels to have the following weapons available:
Rifle, 500 rounds
Shotgun, 12 gauge, 250 rounds
Pistol, .45 caliber, 250 rounds
(I'll omit his more esoteric recommendations, such as a katana, silencers for the rifle and pistol, laser sights, etc. that just aren't practical for most folks.)
With this as my baseline, I did an inventory of the ammo I currently have at my disposal. Here's how it breaks down:
7.62X39: 740 rounds at my residence, + AT LEAST 1,000 more at my family's house, maybe as many as 2,000, but likely 1200-1500, for a grand total of 1,800-2,800, give or take.
I have an AK and 2 SKSs at my house, plus another SKS that belongs to my father, plus an SKS that a friend has with a 30 round magazine on it. Altogether, that's 5 rifles that chamber the venerable 7.62X39
7.62X54R: approximately 300-400 at my place and another 300-400 residing with my family. (I count the ammo at my family's house as readily available becaue we live about 3.5 miles apart in rural country and I shouldn't have any difficulty reaching them if need be, even in the case of widespread solanum outbreak.) Me and The Wife each have an M44 Mosin Nagant.
6.5X55: approximately 100 rounds here and 200+ rounds stored at, you guessed it, the family's. Only 1 rifle that fires this round, but it's a Swedish Mauser and accurate as all get out.
7.5X55: app. 50 rounds altogether. Once again, only 1 rifle for this cartridge, but it's robust and accurate, not to mention powerful.
22 LR: 400 or so rounds here and an unknown amount in the possession of my father. I've got a 10/22 and the family has a few 22 rifles and 1 single action 22 pistol that I currently have to shoot at the damn neighbor dogs that crap in my yard.
.45 ACP: 425 rounds here and perhaps an equal amount that my father has. At a realistic estimate, we have 650 rounds of 45 in various loadings. I have a SIG 220 and he has a Colt and a Glock 30.
38 spcl./.357 mag: about 625 rounds here and maybe 100-200 more at the folks' house. Me and The Wife each have a .357 and my mother has a little 38 she keeps by the bed.
.40 S&W: 50 rounds. Just one pistol (a Ruger P94) that fires this round.
12 gauge: a few boxes of OO Buck, maybe 1 box of target/plinking stuff. We also have a 20 guage that we're running low on ammo for.
So all told, I've got the basics that the ZSG recommends covered and then a substantial margin above that. But not substantial enough. I need to stock up on/reload a ton of 40 S&W, ditto the 45, 7.5, 6.5, and even the 38/.357. I'd like to get 500-1000 more 7.62X39s and a few hundred more 7.62X54R, preferably the modern production hunting stuff that's out there. Ultimately, I'd like to have 500 rounds minimum for each rifle with a goal of at least 7000 rounds total when it's all said and done. My biggest deficiency is my lack of shotgun shells. Really need to start stocking up on those, especially the self-defense loads.
However, as a counterweight to my perceived lack of a big enough safety margin, I should mention that my father has a .30/30 a over 100 rounds for it and a .30/06 with about 200 rounds for it loaded up and ready to go. He also has several boxes of 12 gauge and a double barrel to feed them in.
Conclusion: if a zombie outbreak occurred RIGHT NOW, and RIGHT HERE, I would survive, and be able to offer shelter and protection to a few select friends if they could make it to me somehow. Still, it's better to have and not need, right?

In theory it would, but I suspect that it would only effect them for a moment due to the limited brain activity we observe in zombies. 0 -

I started thinking about zombies only being killed by head shots. This leads to the idea that the brain is still controling the zombie's body, and probably doing so with tiny electrical impulses. So would a taser work on zombies?
Yes.......as long as it was being shocked.
I'd stick with a real firearm0 -

That's what I was thinking as well, but it lead to another idea as well.....Can you fry them with electricity? How about a massively overpowered electric fence, would it work?0 -

Ya know, thats a good question. Now I'm no expert on zombie biology, but my best guess would be that if you literally cooked the zombie's brain with high voltage, you would in effect kill it. But again, this is just conjecture.0 -

Well, you fellers can say what you want, but I've shot many a sassy zombie with just my pistol!
I will remove their heads with one swipe of my Stihl Magnum 24" chainsaw and observer their rediculous milling around and running into walls while I sit on the porch drinking beer and eating burgers with my trusty chainsaw by my side. I kick their blinking-eyed heads down the hill as I laugh madly, challenging their next feeble attack!
I am the ultimate power in the universe of these disgusting creatures of the grave! It is I that they fear!! HaHaHaHaHAA!!!0 -
Jeez you don't even have a katana? No Kool-aid? You ain't gonna make it man.
By the way the attack has been postponed, the zombies all got work in a Tim Burton movie and are living in Hollywood were they blend right in.0 -
I'm just about ready

and I got this on the way, it's a 22lr HK clone

If I have to move to another secure position, then I will only take what I need.
But I shouldn't have to move from where I live.0 -
so if they where liberals before becoming zombies do you have to shoot them in the ass? 0 -
