Shipping ammo
Excuse my ignorance on the subject but could someone give me the "nutshell" version of shipping ammo? Are there different rules for different states? Does it need to be shipped a certain way by certain carriers? Thanks!

Ya just never know with USPS. I bought a Colt from a C&R and because I also have a C&R he could ship directly. He was planning to ship USPS and I told him he could not unless he was an 01 FFL. He went and asked his postmaster, who looked it up, said it has to go to an FFL and the guy you are sending to has one, no problem. He shipped it right then. 0 -

Please double check that statement, as I believe you are incorrect. If it was legal, collectable ammunitions could be sent here from Europe (where there is still gobs of it available through many sources). I've always had to have it shipped by boat. [;)]
UPS will not ship ammunition by air outside the US under any circumstances. They will ship by air domestically. FedEx will not ship ammunition internationally without prior approval. Many other carriers will ship ammunition but I don't know if they have small package services.
ORM-D is only used in domestic shipments and is not recognized outside the US. In international air shipments, small arms ammunition is classified as a Division 1.4S explosive which, you can imagine, is heavily restricted. The maximum weight of an international air shipment of small arms ammunition is 25 Kg on a passenger aircraft and 100 Kg on a cargo only aircraft. Airlines have seperate limits on ammunition in passenger baggage, usually 5 Kg.
I got this information from the 2007 edition of the International Air Transport Association Dangerous Good Regulations which is the bible for air shipments of hazardous materials.0 -

and not property of the government, like Mail boxes etc. box.
Can I have ammo shipped to it, or is this illegal. (I may be
out of town when UPS delivers) ??0 -
Regarding ammunition in airplanes.
Wonder how or if hunters going to Africa transport cartridges for their rifles..
It is my understanding that hunters that have to change aircraft in England usually employ an agent to get their firearms transfered becuse of bad handling by airport employees. Would suppose that airport employees would raise hell if they were required to handle ammunition if it were stored in a separate container...0 -

HobbyGuy, I've been shipping live ammunition for 30+ years and I regret to say you have been misinformed. BTW, EOD Guy knows his stuff and has forgotten more about shipping such materials than the average counter drone will ever learn.

You were talking to low grade idiots or PC types (granted there is an inherent redundancy there). Ammo can be - and is! - shipped by air if the shipper is HazMat certified and the person paying for the shipment is willing to pay the . . . VERY HIGH . . . expense of doing so. DHL is bloody worthless for anything, anyway! I'd not trust them to handle used cat litter, much less a document of value. Airborne is yet another lesser carrier (at least in the Northeast) and they refuse to do ammo.
Basically, there are two realistic commercial choices for domestic shipment of small(ish) amounts of ammunition: UPS or FedEx, ground shipment. Shipments outside the CONUS are a whole 'nother matter. Surface shipment is possible to AK & HI at substantial premium. Air or international shipment of live ammunition is possible, but there is paperwork (likely reams of it, depending) and significant expenses associated with doing so, whether by surface or by air.0 -
About shipping to a (NON-US PO or NON-goverment) rental mail box...
I researched this and was confirmed by FFL and MidwayUSA -
ammo can be shipped to such an address if UPS or Fed-Ex
can deliver packages there ammo or not.
As long as ID and ammo statement are send prior to shipping (or are on file), there is no signature required to acutally receive the ammo pckg. and it is legaly and ok to do so.0 -

Having worked at a FedEx sorting facility, I can attest that packages are not x-rayed or examined in any way. The only time anyone would see the contents would be if the package broke open, which happens rarely. The sheer volume of packages that even a small terminal has to deal with makes inspecting each one impossible.0 -

If it was discovered the person who shipped the package could be in big trouble with the Department of Transportation. Shipping an undeclared hazardous materials shipment has a minimum civil fine of $15,000 per day for each day the package is in transit. That doesn't include any criminal charges.
DOT can be very proactive in prosecuting undeclared hazmat shipments. An undeclared hazmat shipment brought down the ValueJet aircraft over Florida, killing everyone on board. The people making that shipment went to jail.0 -
