Can you shoot shot?
The favorite squirel gun question got me wondering. Can you shoot shot from a blackpowder rifle? Ive never owned one so I really know nothing about them except I may be missing out on something?

Yeah, a black powder shot gun! [:o)] I have one, but haven't used it in several years. Last time I had it out, used it to quail hunt. Wore me out reloading that sucker and carrying around the shot! I guess in a dire emergency, life saving type of situation, you could use some small rocks on a bp rifle. I wouldn't want to be behind it though! Or in front of it either, for that matter! 0 -
I have fired #12 rat shot from a .50 Hawken.
I loaded the powder, then put in a wad of newspaper. Put in an ounce of shot, then another wad of newspaper.
The stuff caught the spin of the rifling, and it sprayed the shot all over the place. I wanted to shoot flying carpenter bees, but it wasn't too good for that.
Plus a .50 is a tiny shotgun. A 28 gauge is about .58, so a .50 is something like a 37 gauge shotgun. Load it up with number 6s, not going to be too good for quail.
Now these guys with big smoothbores do pretty well. I read a story from a guy who hunts ducks with a Brown Bess flintlock smoothbore, but that is .75 caliber.0 -

If you do it alot it will mess up the lands and grooves (rifling). rifled guns are made to spin 1 solid piece of lead. putting lots of small shot into a rifled barrel over time can really mess with accuracy. Now I dont know if you are shooting one of the newer inline muzzle loaders that are good out to 200 yds or just an $100 musket. Personally Id just go get a shotgun. Some of these guys here on GB used to shoot .22 shot out of thier .22 rifle, they can attest to what it does to the rifling.0
