Lipitor is what the wife ended up on after 18 months of trying to bring her cholesterol down through diet. Working good so far, now if she'll just stop eating 2 fried eggs for breakfast every morning!

Try policosonal before Lipitor. policosonal is a natural fiber and works to lower cholesterol without the possible very negative side effects of the statins. you can get it here:

My Mom's levels were over 300, 6 months of this stuff and it was 180.

Lose 25 pounds. And, a doctor told me "if it came from an animal, it has cholesterol in it". Gonna have to excercise all vestiges of the beer out. It raises the triglycerides. Been where you are for over forty years. Ya gotta do it to keep doin' it. Good luck!

One easy thing I have done is to take grape seed extract. It has helped my numbers. It has the same effect as red wine without the suger and alcohol.

Eat more beans and oatmeal. Both reduce cholesterol. The oatmeal
works particlarly well eaten uncooked (mix with applesauce or something to make it tolerable).

That ain't nuttin'. My numbers would wipe yours out. Been "worried" about it for 20 yrs. now. According to modern medical science, I should have suffered numerous if not fatal heart attacks, stroke, impotence, blindness, hairloss, restlessleg syndrome, TB, plaque and any other number of ailments. But I haven't. Your young. Drink. Smoke. Eat Meat. Chase lose wommin. And when you catch one, have your way with them. Don't live under a rock.

Exercise and weight loss is the best way to lower your cholesteral level. Not eating foods (animal products) that contain cholesteral is the best way to RAISE your cholesteral.

It is amazing to me in this day and age with the Internet that people still insist on remaining ignorant about nutrition. It further amazes me that with all the gov't bashing, people still believe the FDA. If they say it, it is most likely wrong or politically motivated.

    Do your own research!

Knock off the fried eggs- Oatmeal is good. So is Cherrios. Use 1% milk. Leave the Coke and Pepsi alone unless is diet. Butter- no. Drop weight, will drop the numbers- pretty fast.

Obviously this doctor doesn't eat or know about venison.

Add some good old fashion wild game to your diet to take the place of store bought meat. It is the only reason that my wife is not on some sort of medication for her cholesterol. She has some predisposition for it, her father has already had one heart attack and all three of her siblings are on Lipitor. Her's is high average, but still a whole heckava lot lower than everyone else's in her family. The only difference between them and us is that we have some sort of wild game meat at least 4 times a week.

Plus it is just plain good!

What is so frustrating is that sometimes your levels are the results of YOUR PARENTS, OTHER RELATIVES etc...

High cholesterol can run in families and you could have high cholesterol even if you were a vegetarian and did everything right...
Anyone else in your family have it?..brothers, sisters, mom, dad, uncles etc?..

Yea, but usually folks are sneaking the snickers bars under the covers and having a food orgy! That the real reason the numbers are high.

    sig,

ITs a well proven fact, proven by the medical commnunity, scientists etc that genetics play a very important role in high cholesterol...

High Cholesterol - What Causes It?

The causes of high cholesterol are many but factors such as: genetics, age, gender and excessive weight play an important role and we'll take a closer look at each later in this article. However, the primary factor is food that contains saturated and trans fats which results in elevated cholesterol levels in the blood stream.

As a cause of high cholesterol obesity continues to be a key factor. When a person becomes obese their body mass is primarily made up of fat which contains cholesterol. Keeping your weight under control is clearly important because it contributes to a variety of health issues - not just elevated cholesterol levels.

Genetics also play a role as another cause of high cholesterol. If relatives suffer from high cholesterol you may also have the genetic predisposition. This can be controlled through medication so check with your doctor for guidance.

It's been shown that some men are prone to high levels of cholesterol as early as their teens while women tend to see high cholesterol levels after menopause.

I'm 30 and just had mine done, bad cholestorol was high but good cholestorol was excellent. Doc said he was not too worried and would not recommend meds until I was 40. I cut out cheese, eggs, red meat for the most part. I get re-tested in 4 months. I've heard garlic pills and grapes can help lower the bad chol. as well as avoiding the foods above.

Take a statin, If you have a fimily history of hi cholesterol you wont ever be able to contol it with diet and excercise. Keep on top of it. Vytorin is better than lipitor for % reduction, expecially if you eat bad. Statins will be in the water like flouride before too long. Happy Birthday.[:D]

Lipitor has something in the area of 5000 side effects reported. The one I experienced was one of the lesser-known ones -- I couldn't regulate my body temperature.

I'm one of those who can stand outside in a t-shirt while it is snowing and not think it any big deal. But, for the two weeks I was on Lipitor, I couldn't bundle up enough in my house when it was 90 degrees outside.

I got switched to Zocor. Zocor is more old-school stuff and has less quirky side effects. I've been on it for four years now and have really brought down my scary numbers into the "very normal" category.

    Thanks for the advise everyone.

I do have a substantial family history of Heart Disease and high cholesterol.

I got it to drop a little bit by being more consious at fast food restaurants.

We're going to try the switch to chicken, pork, and seafood. We already to a lot of chicken, we're going to concentrate more on the seafood. I'll see where it gets me too next year, if there is still no change, I'll talk to the docs about prescriptions.

    Very simple.

1 tsp. of Apple Cider Vinegar daily.

Try it. Shock your doctor. Seems to work on most people.

well said, I am about 125 pounds overweight right now[ down about 20 pounds currently I'm working on it] and work 50-60 hrs a week but at last check 6 months ago cholesterol was 179 down from 200 1.5 yrs ago[ldl 138 wants it down to 100] sugar 81 and triglycerides 99 but over the last 12 years I have eaten a lot of turkey and when I can venison and plenty of vegetables alot of it is hereditary and none of my family had many cardiac problems I know I'm pusshing my luck TRADE THE BEEF FOR VENISON AND THE CHICKEN FOR TURKEY AND FISH I am not fit to be giving reduction recommendations, yet but I know as much as I have overeaten in my life some of this must be credited to the love for venison over beef. I know someone will make fun of my weight, if so all I can say is, well that I am working on
