Math problem for you to solve.
Three brothers were renting an appartment and it was rent day. Their sister stopped by and said that she would drop the rent off so each brother gave her 10 dollars. When she gave the 30 dollars to the landlord he said that the brothers had helped him that month so the rent was only going to be 25 dollars and he gave her back 5, one dollar bills. Well, this sister not being the smartest of the bunch could not devide five dollars evenally so she decided to give each brother one dollar back and keep two for her self. That means that each brother paid nine dollars and she has two dollars. Nine times three is twenty seven plus two equalls twenty nine. Where did the other dollar go to.

    Rent is 25.00
Sis has the other 5.00 from the original 30.00
sis gives brothers each one dollar
    3.00 from original 30.00 is 27.00
    sis keeps 2.00
2.00 from 27.00 is 25.00 which was kept by the landlord.

    Simple.

people get tripped up by adding the sisters 2.00 to 27.00 instead of subtracting the 2.00 from 27.00

Is the one word answer supposed to be SUBTRACTION?

There's still a missing dollar somewhere. I came up with the same answer you have, but the brothers paid $27 and the sis only kept $2...that's $29...the only answer that makes any sense is taxes.

ECC - That isn't quite true. The brothers only paid $25 in rent. $25/3 = $8.33333333(etc) each. If you add the $1 that each of them got back you get $9.333333333(etc.). $9.333333X3 = $28. Add the $2 the sister kept = $30. This is just different math to get to the same conclusion that MVP posted.

I came up with that possibility too, but they each paid $9...and 3X9=27. The sister only kept two...that's $29...where's the extra $1???

The word is confuse- The original rent amount is not the issue. The $2 is the difference between the final rent amount, $25 and the actual rent amount, $27.

It would be the same if the original rent amount was $27 and the landlord gave $2 back, but the $2 never made it to the renters.

  • dlrjj
Eric, you keep trying to add the $2 to the $27, and that is just wrong. The $2 is PART of the $27, the three $1's that they got back are the rest of the $30.

    $25 + $2 + $1 + $1 + $1 ='s $30[:)]

Clue: everybody keeps looking at the math problem and not the numbers and how they are used in a certain sequence. Remember formula's and equazations have names for specific uses.

We don't need any more clues.
I already gave you the answer.
    There is no missing dollar.
    you can't still be confused.
The brothers, landlord, sis and rent are all just parts of a story and have nothing to do with the math. Take the story away and do the math and use subtraction instead of addition and it is simple.

MVP , I am sorry that this upset you so much and I will not go on with it any farther. Your answer is not correct as a mathamatical answer. There are principals like two odds make a even (1+3=4) and there are principals in adddition, subtraction and division. The answer is a principal of 3's and roots of three's. I hope that you are never taken by these principals. Again, sorry.

The answer is not hard. Explaining the answer is the hard part!

Each person paid $9.00 for a $25.00 room.

    $9.00 x 3 = $27.00

    $27.00 - $25.00 = $2.00

$2.00 is what the girls kept.

The division of the $5.00 is extraneous information.

The numbers do not need to add up to $30.00 because $30.00 was an inaccurate number to begin with.

of course, if you want to see the $30:

$30 was paid, the room got $25, they got $3.00, the girls got $2.00

    $25.00 + $3.00 + $2.00 = $30.00

the dollar didn't really disappear. In fact, there's no logic to this puzzle at all. the answer is: The room still costs $25, and the sister got $2, and they each got $1 back, totalling $3. There's the $30. The sister should have given the brothers $1.67 each and pitched in a penny, to be a good sister and they wouldnt be in this mess.
