Question Regarding Offers For Sale

Offers for sale are not allowed. However, want ads are allowed.

Say I am seeking a Webley-Vickers .50-80 machine pistol, and I can't find one on the auctions, so I post a want ad here.

Well, ol' Walter Mitty down in sunny Florida just happens to have a minty Webley-Vickers .50-80 machine pistol, and since he has had to give up snipe hunting, he is willing to let it go.

At what point does this become an "offer to sell?"

I make an offer to buy. Walter offers me what I am looking for. Can we get together via email and handle it, or must Walter list his W-V on the auction site and let me bid on it?

    Thanks.

    JUST MY TWO CENTS....

In that case, IF Mr. Mitty (Tapachita Tapachita) is SHARP...he will simply E-mail the fellow directly and say "HEY...I think I have one knocking about" and they and their Class 3 dealer can work out the headache!
GB should be OUR FIRST PLACE TO LOOK BUT IF WHAT YOU WANT IS NOT THERE THEN GB SHOULD BE HAPPY TO BE OF HELP IN OUR SILLY HOBBY...As I tell folks that come into my gun shop, when one of the other stores has what they want and I do not.."I will get your money next time" and I am HAPPY to direct them to another area shop (JUST GOOD FOR BUSINESS RELATIONS!!!).
    Again..JUST my 2 cents.

It would seem to me that it should be listed on the site.

If you agree on a buy it now price, it would cost you the same as going outside GB. It will cost the seller a little, but that commission helps pay for these forums we use.

i agree with both statements and add this to be considered....

Mr. Nunn, you may be looking for something you don't see on the auction side and post in the wanted section. once there, a mamber may have the very item you need but didn't think to list it up for auction for reasons like "i'm gonna build this some time" or "i just have an extra." I don't think it would violate any house rules if you two were to make a deal off site that would be mutually beneficial.

I, too, have done the "I don't have it, let me call my nearest comeptitor and see if they have one for you" bit and had made some very good repeat business that way. people remember when you go out of your way to take care of them. who knows, the guy you find on the wanted forum that has what you need may later be seeking something you have up for auction and bid for it.

gb throws us scraps thru the use of want ads.
the big money is for people outright selling things on real auctions. this is why ebay went down hill. they cut into the little guys pockets looking to buy and sell little things. it got to a point that it wasnt worth it anymore, because the only people bidding on these little things were people who could afford the luxury of overpaying for it. the little guys stuff went stale and the fun of trading and aquiring for little guys went sour.
if you start making people with want ads having to get it thru an auction, the time and crap one must got thru to get it makes it not worth the time.
if gb does this, they will help the old fashioned gunlist get a boost again. people will just place ads in the gunlist. heck, why not...they gotta pay for the advertising anyway.

we are taught that the best things in life are free.
but to retail businesses like gb or any other website...the best things in life are 'fee.'

sad day indeed when you see a fine website cater to full retail for profit, rather than the little guy for fun and good deals.

Most sellers that answer WTB ads, would never advertise their items. I had only one transaction with a WTB item. When I asked the seller why he never listed the item, I was told he only did FTF sales and would NEVER list an item on auction. He gave me a complete bill of sale with DL info so I know the item was not stolen. I believe sellers would be hesitant to go through a GB sale to answer a WTB ad. The sellers that would agree to going through GB to sell, are already advertising at RETAIL on the auction farce anyway. I believe that, if GB made an effort to listen to BUYER complaints instead of constantly backing the retail sellers, GB would benefit through increased sales. I have personally stopped buying on GB and have moved on to other sales sites because of this. Aside from the lack of buyer support, the other things that turned me off to auctions sales are: Penny auctions with full retail reserve. Caveat emptor. Auction sites that don't support the policy of the seller giving the buyer their phone number to confirm address money is sent and make for a more secure transaction. I don't want my answer to be misconstrued as "auction bashing". I list all these issues because they have turned me off from the auction side as a buyer and by turning me off as a buyer, I wouldn't go through the auction to sell an item to a WTB ad.

I just can't see any reason to buy anything on the GB auction side. Only something very exotic would be worth the effort and cost. And I don't buy exotic stuff.

My opinion is that anything listed here, can be had for less money, elsewhere.

If day to day living wasn't such a financial struggle, I would surely buy from (some of the) sellers, here.

I beg to differ.. First of all GB has guns that are usually in duplicates advertised. Gives the consumer a comparision shopping. I have bought guns off of GB that are not available locally or anywhere else I have searched. I have searched GB and other auctions on line for quite some time and still have not found the one gun I am still looking for. A forum member has one but will not sell it.

Colt or Weatherby Drilling. Preferably a Colt/Sauer 12 x 12 x 30/06. I missed one a German had here locally by one week. Quoted a hydroseed job for the guy. He had an Anshultz .22 scoped on the deck. We immediately spoke guns.. Said he sold BOTH Sauer Drillings, One Colt and one Sauer for $2500.00 . I about got sick right there.

I've gotten several Webleys through Gunbroker that I would most likely have never seen for sale at a gun show. I have bought a number of guns from the shows, and generally you can get one cheaper here in the South than you can purchase through GB--but you will almost never, ever get the "selection" at a show that you can get through GB. All of the sellers I have dealt with through GB have been top-notch.

I did get a Long Branch Mk IV No. 3 Lee Enfield at a show that would have cost twice what I paid for it through an auction site. So it's best to visit both, and to shop very selectively!

this is the part everyone forgets.
the internet was suppose to be a tool for people with stuff to contact people wanting stuff, and exchanges were made and everyone was happy. it was an info thing.
but someone saw it as a way to make hoards of money, so they went and got all the retailers who are in the business to make money and said, hey look at the this media? lets use it to sell our 'WARES.' and they did. so, the internet became nothing more than a web sales site.
and all the little guys just wanting to swap and trade stuff with others that had stuff, got pushed aside.
back when we could swap and trade, sell and buy on small private volumes, (not for retail profit, but rather clean out the attic type sales,) ups was cheap, guns could go in and out fast, and ffls werent always needed. eveyone trusted everyone. you didnt have middleman expenses. everyone was happy.
    but no.
the RETAILERS had to go and make it an enterprise.
now, ups, usps, the websites, and all the legal jocks all got a piece of the pie. all the fun is gone. a guy cant even sell a 50 cent magazine without SOMEONE raking it thru the coals for their share of the ash.
granted, websites need to pay operating expenses. but this isnt one of them. selling more hitler guns is. make you bucks off the guys with bucks, and let the little guy go begging with free want ads.
its my opinion and im sticking to it.

I dont see it that way. I respect your opinion, but I think its a real pesimistic way of looking at a very good tool.
