    Years and years ago I read some article in Guns and Ammo or something about a piece of metal that bolts onto the front of an automatic, in this case a 1911. As the author told it, if the person you're pointing the gun at pushes the slide back just a bit, the gun won't fire. The piece of metal allows you to shove the gun in the guy's back and still allows it to fire.

    I won't comment on the logical / usefulness / are you kidding me? factor, but it does look like the bayonet mount may serve such an additional purpose. Then again, you'd have sunk the bayonet four inches into the guy before his hide would touch the front of the slide, so who knows?

    A bayonet, and this isn't the first time one was mounted on a pistol, offers an alternative to shooting but who wants to get that close?You're probably better off with a serious knife in the other hand.

    You use the bayonet when you only have one round left so that you can extract the bayonet with the assist of the recoil when it gets stuck between the enemy's ribs.
