At the mall shooting
An off duty officer in street clothes was involved in the taking of the shooter down , I heard his own account tonight in a press conference. He stated in it, that when uniforms started showing up , he had his gun out and was yelling at them he was an off duty officer, his badge was inaccesible in his wallet and he didnt want to let his gun down to get it . He was worried they might mistake him for the shooter, he emphasized how he over and over was shouting his name and city he worked for. that got me to thinking. If a CCW holder was in his position. How would he cover himself? put the gun away when uniforms arrive? Not an easy position to be in when both the good guys and bad guys are aiming at you.

I'd continue to hold my gun on the perp until the police arrived then lower it quickly and explain everything once all parties had calmed down. 0 -
Once I saw cops I would definately drop my gun and get on the ground with my hands out. Try and make sure to take any cover I could in the process. 0 -

thats what i would do, but also if the guy had actually fired off rounds, i wount hesitate to put him down.

Some years back a guy walked into a restaurant in Texas and killed about a dozen people. Are you saying, that had you been in that restaurant, dining alone, and carrying, if you had the chance you would have hidden in the bathroom and let the guy murder all those people, since neither you or your family was endangered?
Use of deadly force is ok with the DA if it is to protect someone else from being murdered.0 -
Undercover cops shoot each all the time. It's a serious problem to be a civilian holding a gun as units respond to "shots fired" call.
One SD instructor recommended holding up your wallet showing your driver's license as if it were police badge. Cops will generally recognize this as a move by an armed civilian (no crook would ever do this) and will enable them to ID you as a "good guy."
In the one instance where I was at the scene of a shooting when cops arrived I put my gun down and raised my hands because I did not want to shot by an anxious police officer. Fortunately, one of the first officers on the scene knew me personally but it can easily happen that an armed citizen could be mistaken for the criminal.0 -
An old guy in line at a bank here, in the days before concealed carry, Shot a would-be bank robber. Police and Sheriff considered the old guy had committed no crime worthy of prosecution. 0 -

If i see a somone walking through the mall in my direction with a 12ga. and he is close enough to hit me with said 12ga. he/she is going down.
The way I understand it, is that you have the right to protect yourself. when faced with a oncoming threat within 25ft and said person can, has, or might use deadly force against you, or your family. in the end you'd be justified in shooting said person.
- turning and runing, to get shot in the back isn't protecting yourself its suiside.0 -
My intent on this question was not to decide to act or not act on the situation, I already made that commitment when I got the carry permit. It was to gather thoughts on how to avoid getting shot by an officer . Saxon had some good ideas 0 -

I have thought about that very situation many times. What I carry would work at very short distances and I would defend myself and my family if and when the shooter got close enough and was distracted by others. My effective range is only about 7 yards and thats when I am not driven by fear. To engage a person with a long gun, shotgun or rifle with a Kel-tec 380 is not smart, in my humble opinion.
If I was lucky enough to be packing a 45 acp my fear level would be less and my range extended out to 25+ yards.
To engage in a resturant or train when a person is walking up and down shooting people is much different that getting into a gunfight in a Mall with hundreds of inocent folks running around.0 -

I too carry a P3AT, and circumstances would have to be just right
before I would pull it.

Good question. Buy a "conceal firearm license holder" badge and when the cops show up, start waving that around. From a distance they will assume it is a LEO badge yet when they find out otherwise it will still be legal for you to do what you did as long as you don't shout out "I'm a cop" or some such. 0 -
I would hope the gun fight would be over by the time the uniforms would arrive. I would lay down my weapon and move back and get on my face then, until things are sorted out. 0
