Why so expensive?

It's a centerfire. Costs much more to manufacture than a rimfire. Also, ammo for relatively new calibers is usually a lot more expensive than the old timers.

Sorry Mr Wilson, but the .17HMR is a rim fire. I believe that as more manufactures produce this round the price will drop some. At one time Hornaday was the only manufacture, because it was their round and wouldn't allow other ammunition manufactures to produce the round for retail.

Check http://www.sportsmansguide.com/ they usually have abetter price. And yes it is great fun.I've shot mine out to 200 meters using potatoes and clay pidgeons for targets,if there isn't much wind it is great.

Maybe Doug was talking about the Remington 17 cal. Center Fire. We had a Remington .17 cal center fire back about 30 years ago.

That could very well have been. I did not mean any disrespect. Sorry.
