You can get solar powered but I don't know how well they work.

Solar powered works fine, it just recharges a battery. Deer can easily jump 6' high over the fence, so you may need three strands. Keep the weeds off of it, or it'll cause it to lose zapping power. Unless you get the "weed zapper" models which burn the weeds off as they touch it.
There is no "economical" way to do this, really. Wire is expensive right now. Good luck.

If it is a remote fence, you can get a unit powered by a 12 VDC deep cycle battery. FI=Shock, Inc makes a cheap unit that works pretty well. It uses steel wire and has complete instructions if this is your first fence. They also make 110 VAC models. Available at Home Depot and others.

Solar works great, but if it isn't an 8' tall fence they are coming through it.

I use #12 High Tensil. It is good for the horses & cattle, but the deer act as if it isn't there.

You might want to check with your local DNR. Here in Mn the DNR will give you the fencer as a means to control the deer, and keep them out. I see this a lot with bears and bee hives. Dear and produce farmers. Cant hurt to ask.

I have a Gallagher solar powered and have used Parmacs, I use them for fencing horse pastures. probably will never go back to battery powered again, around here the only way to keep deer/elk out of stacks is at least an 8' wovenwire fence or double run hogwire panels.

Good luck, but maybe you should plant flowers that they don't like to eat.

To what trinity says, I think the hollow hair of deer/elk/moose have something to do with the way a electric fence afftects them or does not affect them, sort of like an insulator and the charge never get to the skin, unless the touch with their nose.

One other thing, Have heard, don't know if it works, but heard that people have had luck of scattering human hair along the edges of the gardens to repel deer, maybe make a trip to your local barbershop and get a sack full and try before you start investing some serious dollars into fencing

If you use New Zealand wire, it'll be a lot easier to string.

We started using it maybe 7 or 8 years ago, and since then, we've had no deer problem at all.

The solar type use a car battary and a solar powered battary charger to keep the battary up. If possible, the 110vac type are more reliable and less expensive to set up. Steel E-fence wire is not that expensive.
Drive "T" posts about every 10-15 feet and use the plastic "snap on" standoffs. Run 1 hot strand at knee, hip and shoulder height (3 wire), for added security run a grounded strand between each of the top 2 (5 wire) + clamping the grounding wire to the stake closest to the fence charger. As short a run as your going to have, you can simply hand tension the wire, remember to only secure it at the ends. Make sure that you don't put any kinks in the wire, as this weakens it greatly.

Make sure that you wife knows how to shut down the fence, or she will not be happy the first time she hits it.

Ya beat me to it! [:D]

Also don't step across one with your pants wet from the dew and make contact! [:(]

Mercury. In Wv outside of Elkins there's a fence that's at least 10" high beside the highway that was intended to keep the deer off the road. There's belly hair caught along the top of that fence.
I have no idea of what a deer is capable of. Anything that can run for a half mile with everything in its chest cavity turned to liquid amazes me!

They won't touch bleeding hearts, they eat just about everything else around here, including plastic plants!

No matter what you go with, battery, solar, plug in make sure you go with Gallagher. I have sold and used nearly every brand out there and have had by far the best luck with Gallagher. Besides they are pro gun. They give CZ's to dealer with large increases in sells. I get mine in the next couple of months

Get a coon hunting dog. They'll keep them out of the yard.
