Time for a new Deer rifle.....

Thinking about a Ruger hawkeye or a Remington 700. In 30-06. I dont really like buying guns from wal-mart, but they carry a Rem 700 with a camo stock for under 500 dollars. You even get a scope with it. Pretty nice looking rifle. Any thoughts?????

    The rifle is nice. Contrary to what some will say, a Remington at Wally World is the same rifle that your dealer can get. In fact our Wally World gets their rifles from Sports South and Jerrys (same as other FFLs).

    The problem is that the scope on that particular model is a very low end Bushnell with the Remington name on it. The rifle itself is an ADL model I believe (blind magazine).

    If cost is not a major block, I would go for the 700 SPS which is simply a BDL (hinged floor plate) and invest in a good scope. But if you are cost conscious, then this is a good set up.

    I havent heard much about them yet but its a Remington so I would not be afraid of it. The Model 710 lacked alot according to some people, Im a 700 BDL guy myself. If I needed another high powered rifle I would give this gun a good look.

    I'm the wrong guy to ask this question. For some unexplainable reason Remington has never made a rifle or shotgun that looked or felt right to me. I have many relatives and friends that used Remingintons and swear by them. I'd buy the Ruger.

    Thanks for the thoughts. I never was much of a synthetic stock person either. However, after buying a new muzzleloader this season with a synthetic stock I may be changing my mind on that one. I've actually never owned a 700. I do have a Ruger M77 and love it. I've been hunting for years with my 760 but would like to have a bolt action with a scope. I dont know what it is but I've never like the 760 with a scope. Just throws the whole feel off for me. Happy Holidays to you all and I'll let you know what I end up getting.

    If I was in the market for a new bolt-action 30-06, I would look at a Savage. They aren't expensive, but if money was a concern, I wouldn't hesitate a bit in looking at their Stevens line. Great guns! Great shooters too!

    I could almost bet that the rifle you are looking at is a Model 710. I've been around several of these rifle, but have never sold a new one. To me they are bottom of the bucket rifles, as the action is usually pretty rough and I have seen plenty of them with cracked stocks. I think you would do a heck alot better buying a Savage package gun instead of the Remington. The Savage's are alot better built and probably one of the most accurate out of the box guns.
