Done Did It

Well, after scraping and saving. After much long thought and trying to decide which was better (buy used or rebuild) I finally ordered a barrel and cylinder from Numrich for my Model 14. It's gonna cost as much as buying a good used one. But,
1) Ya never know if your getting a good used one until you get it.
2) I know and trust the gunsmith doing the work, having had him do other work for me.
And
3) The last registered owner of this gun has been dead for seven years. The pistol went to his son, my best friend, then to his son, who ruined the cylinder. The barrel was scavenged to re-build a Model 19 and I bought the carcass from my best friend for a few bucks.

The frame checks out straight, the crane fit is good and my gunsmith has proclaimed the revolver resurrectable.

I've gotten good and bad parts from Numrich and that's kind of a crapshoot, but they've handled my particular customer service issues with professional aplomb, so I'm not too very uptight with that.

Now the wait begins. And every day I have to tell myself that I've wanted a six-inch Smith & Wesson 38-special revolver for many decades...what's another few months?

Man, I"m like a kid at Christmas.

    I'm hoping so, too. But I still haven't ordered any 38 spl brass.

    I'm just old enough to not count them chickens, yet.

    Steady diet of plus-P handloads using iffy range brass. One let go right at the timing notch and suddenly it's a 5-shot.

    I've got an N-frame 357 (28-2) and I don't even feed it hot loads very often. I'm thinking this nice little K-frame 38 will make the perfect platform for mild, target lead loads.

    But look at me..I'm counting chickens again already

    I think it's safe to count the chickens. Numrich does sent out the occasional questionable part, but they always make it right. If the gunsmith is decent, and you say he's a gooden, you've got you a nice little .38. [:)]

    I hope so. My Pop was a gunsmith back in the 50's and early 60's, so I remember there were always guns on his bench. As far back as I can remember, I've wanted a K-38. Must've been the way Pop always admired 'em. He could never afford one, either, with four boys to raise on a cop's salary and doing most of his 'smithing for the love of it. That man gave away a small fortune in labor. But I'm past my bedtime and rambling..

    The point is...I'm finally getting my Smith & Wesson 38, and as soon as I can, I'll post pics.

    I load for my old S&W K frames. I use Trail Boss with plated bullets. A great plinking load for the oldsters (the K Frames and myself[:D])

    I can't remember the particulars, but it seems like the last time I priced Trail Boss, it was expensive, ounce-for-ounce.

    I'm partial to HP-38 and Unique with 158-gr Lazercast SWC's. They give me terrific accuracy out of my old 28-2. They run out at something like 800 FPS. I'm hoping to get much the same performance from a 38spl.

    I'll have to get some coated or jacketed rounds for "barrel wipers", though.
