Different addresses?????

Okay, I'll be the first to admit, not the most techno-geek in the room. What gives with the different address names that both lead you to here. For example.

www.gunsstore.com

www.gunbroker.com

How many others are there and why is this so?

    I have noticed that too and my uneducated guess is to not tie up one address with a bunch of traffic but to sprerad the traffic out over a couple addresses Mainly to keep the load speed up?

    I am uneducated and only guessing though[?][:0][:I]

    The owners came up with www.forthehunt.com for those people who maybe want to log on at work, but their work computer has a filter on it that won't let them log onto an evil website with "gun" in the title.

    DNS - its the name to address resolution service that networks use. Everything has an address, but multiple names can point to one address. Also, names may point to multiple addresses- this is done for load balancing, etc. And, multiple names can pull up completely different sets of content from the same address. And one computer can have multiple addresses as well... but addresses must be unique on a particular network.

    edit - gunsandammo.com points to a different IP, but it redirects web requests to gunbroker.com (and therefore the same address.) and forums.gunbroker.com are on a different address as well.

    There used to be a general auction web site, kind of like e-barf. linked to GB also when it first started, it had general merchandise and firearms, I was checking the gun auctions there one day, and the were the same as GB! (even my own[:D])

    Its also a way to lock up web address that a competitor might use to create a site similar to gunbroker. Its so easy and cheap for a company like gunbroker to have a brainstorming session and come up with a dozen different web names and buy them before someone else does.
