Approaching purchasing 1st motorcycle
I'm considering the following list:
*Honda Shadow VXL 750
*Suzuki S50 and S40
*Star V Star Custom
*Harley Sportster 883
*Kawasaki Vulcan 500
*The Triumph Classic Line
My parameters for my 1st bike are under $3k, run well in town and short highway trips. Out of the above models, are there any certain years or models I should be weary of when looking?

Someone may have mentioned this already but the Price of Insurance may be a factor... some Bike are very expensive to insure for some really silly reasons besides engine size and price. 0 -

Here is the bike I was telling you about. He bought it last year, made one ride with us (about 250 miles) and his wife said sell it.
It is a nice bike and the original purchaser also works with us, so I know it's history.
Water cooled, shaft drive, 1500cc, low miles, clean and well maintained. He says he wants $4,500 for it, but I know he only paid $4,000 and would probably take that. I don't think you can find a deal like this anywhere.

The email came through, Danny. That's a nice bike. I checked the Kawasaki webpage and one like it has a dry weight of 660lbs, add five gallons of gas and that 700lbs. I think that's a bit big for me. Plus, I need to stick to the 3K max. I just got hit with a rent increase today, so...yeah. If I had any wiggle room I'd be contemplating that one even more. [V] 0 -

I had a Suzuki GS400 painted Candy Apple Red with Kerker pipes and man that baby would scream like nothing I've ever owned. I was chugging around a windy corner at a hefty 35mph and was ran off the road by a drunk driver and jumped a huge ravine...landed on the otherside so hard the bike nose dived into the hill and I came to a very abrupt stop headfirst into the ground.
I layed there for 1 hour or so and thought I was dead. When I got home I called a buddy that wanted the bike and sold it for a few hundred bucks..what was left of it.
The damage to my spine/neck effects me to this day....and I ain't ridden a bike since....BECAUSE I CAN'T. My spine and neck can't take it.
I still love motorcycles and miss riding them. But it's the other people on the road that will kill you. You've been warned.0 -

$3000 will buy you a very nice Suzuki RF900R. This is a cross between a crotch rocket and a sport-touring bike. It has the looks of a rocket, but a bigger tank and a much more relaxed riding position. However, at 130+ hp, it's a very fast bike.
There happens to be one at a shop in Williamsport, Pa right now. These are really nice bikes, but you should have some skills before you hop on one.
For your situation as a new rider... Maybe a Kawasaki KLR 650. Very reliable, excellent handling, and they hold their value over time. Lots of aftermarket do-dads and they'll never overpower you.0 -

I'm visiting the Yamaha dealer tomorrow; looking at these two. I may make it to the HD guys, not sure yet.

You should be able to get an old XLCH for that or a little more. The value will only increase. 0
