NO DSL at the house we are buying...crap crap crap
Ok....I'm certain this has been covered over and over again by many many people. What are my options? Cell phone....internet with Verizon? Is that an option? Charter Cable....my internet, cable tv, and regular phone service all for $99 a month sounds like a major money saver compared to the chunks of money I pay to Bellsouth and Direct TV each month. What are the options here people? Downsides to anything....any contraptions I will need to be leary of?
I will HAVE to get something!!! With how many pictures I upload...dial up is just not happening.

I am a huge fan of high speed cable modems here. We have Comcast as the major provider. I steer clear of Verizon, no luck with them. 0 -
I feel your pain. 0 -
If you can't get cable or DSL, look into getting a mobile access card from one of the cell phone providers. There are few guys at work who have them and, while not as fast as cable or DSL, you can use your laptop anywhere you have a cell signal. 0 -
I have turned off a wireless internet thingy through Verizon already because it didn't work out in the places I wanted it to.....but I figure in a stationary place I may have better luck.
Comcast sounds familiar.....I wonder just who all offers internet service and if one is more reliable than others. I never have problems with my internet as far as what I have with my phone service here (DSL through Bellsouth) but I have had a hardware, software thing or two come up through the years.0 -
Comcast here has the same deal you referred to. All three, phone, internet and cable for $99/mth. 0 -
Actually you will not. I have cable internet at home (Boise) and Verison Broadband when in San Diego (where I am now). Broadband is painfully slow for the cost. I average about 16 kbps and I am used to 400 kbps at home. Any file larger that 1 meg is not gonna be seen by me when in Alpine.
I would ask the neighbors what they use. I asked the phone company in Boise if DSL was available. They said no. Turned out they lied, my next door neighbor had DSL.
Good luck.0 -

Nedd to make sure of the availability of this service in the area. Had it through Cingular, and it wasn't worth them paying ME to have it.0 -
Went thru the same thing last winter. Wife had to get high speed because of work. We had dial-up and Direct TV. Switched to Insight Cable/Broad Band because we couldn't get DSL. Runs about $84/month. Now I can't live without BB. 0 -
I have comcast, the internet is fast, ( and I have 4 comps on the router) I only have basic TV cable, (We don't watch much TV) when we had the comcast "on demand" service, that sucked, and they knew it, every Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning, when I had time or urge to watch a "on demand" program, it was not available! their system in our area was not built to support the amount of customers they had, and they admitted it! so I shut it off[V]

First, I love the responses, really helpful information.
LF, anything wireless is going to suck and will be for the most part unreliable unless you're within very close vicinity to a tower. Will depend on landscape also. If you're going to need to do uploads, satellite isn't your friend either. What I would do, is I'd call local ISP who sells DSL in the area and inquire how far you are actually from CO, if they have one in the area. See, when they say you're too far, it doesn't mean you can't get a reliable connection there, it'll be slower, but it'll be there.
If you have cable as an option, get it and don't even worry about it, from a consumer perspective, DSL or cable -- who cares.
Are you way out there in the boonies?0 -

It is WAY out in the boonies. Volunteer everything....and the only elected officials in this town have lives as hairdressers, school bus drivers, church officials and postal workers. Its pretty "behind the times" and I like it only because of the complete opposite it is from the icky place the store is located.....(what I would imagine h.e. double hocky sticks would be like.) 0 -

Check with yout isp. I too live out in the boonies, and our local phone hub/shack is about 5mi. away. They started offer it a couple months ago, but you could only get it if you lived within 3,000ft. of the shack. Since then the line has moved out some, and at that rate they'll be getting to me soon.[:D][:D][:D]
Not sure just what they have to do, but they obviously can't do everyone at once...at least here.[;)]0 -
LF, did you say cable is available there or no? 0 -
LF...we live in an area like you describe. No DSL as we aren't anywhere near close enough to the "exchange" for the phone company. When we moved into our new place a couple of years ago, we dropped our land-line phone anyway. Went to satellite TV, but kept our cable modem and hook-up. It is through Mediacom Cable. Runs about $45 a month for their internet service. And we have had no problems. I can't tell from your original post if you can get cable at your new place or not, but if so, go cable and don't look back. You will probably find it faster than DSL anyway. 0 -
If you aren't playing games (FPS or MMOs) online or need anything else for low-latency then satellite is an OK setup. Only complaint about them I have is windows only (I don't use windows or mac...) and the initial equipment set up is expensive. 0 -
I have wireless but they don't use satellites. So far, knock on wood, service has been great. The outfit is a local one but I included contact info so you might find out how it works and if another provider might be in your area.

I have to check on the options I have available. I just wasn't thinking about the internet when we were house hunting. Just as a last thought as we were waiting on the inspection and doing a bit of looking around I asked the current owner about the computer he had.....that's when he said the dreaded words
"DSL isn't available"
I just went numb a little. I live on line these days. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the house....and we are still getting it, but I have some homework to do now. I just don't know where to start.0 -
I like cable internet, I have had it for 3 years now. Not the same as dorm life though. Charter customer service is non existent. They do however give every effort to fix problems with service. Its just their people on the phone are horrible. 0
