Range, Stopping power, or Ammo count?
What do you consider first and foremost when choosing calibers? Is it the range, how hard it hits, or how many bullets you can cram into the magazine?
I know some folks, for example, say they prefer the .45 ACP over 9mm because it has more stopping power. Some folks say they prefer a rifle over a shotgun because of greater range. And some folks say that they prefer semiautos over revolvers because they get more bullets.
I know most folks, like me, will likely say they prefer to shoot what they can control because accuracy matters over everything else, but in the absence of that, which factor is paramount to you?

Something funny happened in my neighborhood a drug dealer came to collect $5 owed to him with a car load of thugs to a guy living close to me when approched the neighbor pointed a 9mm pistol to the dealer's head, cocked the hammer, quickly turning the gun sidways as he pulled the trigger, firing a shot sideways of the dealer's head. Instantly the dealer hit the ground as though he'd just been shot, thinking he'd been shot, cuz that's what he thought you're supposed to do when shot. Now that's knockdown power for you! Oh ya both got arrested facing charges. If you don't brake a bone, or stop a bullet in it's path by an opposing force greater than it then knockdown will occure only if psychological. The hurt has to be greater than the perp or animal's pain tolerance for them to drop and doesn't guarantee stopping either. 0 -
Accuracy is paramount to me. As has been said, though, different guns for different purposes. Few if any really fit the bill for every possible scenario. I'm going to assume what we're talking about is a situation where what/who I'm shooting at, will shoot back if he gets a chance. In that case, a rifle, unless I know for a certainty the shooting will be done at close quarters, in which case a shotgun -- but still one I know to be as accurate as the nature of the beast allows.
Since an accurate rifle can also be fast and hard-hitting, it would be as unrealistic to insist on only one factor in deciding what to carry, as it would be to expect one weapon to be the best answer to all needs. I'd opt for an M14/M1A if money were no object, most likely an SKS if I needed to go cheap. Why not an AK? I've used them and we're not compatible. Can't hit diddly. Why not an M16/AR15? I favor bigger bullets, and, again, the AR configuration just doesn't work for me as naturally as guns with more conventional-style stocks. And, no slam on the .223, I just feel happier, more serene, at peace with the world and all in it, if what I'm trying to kill it with is a .30 caliber.
So, accuracy, but speed and power included, since there's no reason they couldn't be.0 -

It's not any one factor by itself. It's the melding of form and function and striking the necessary balance between the trade offs. 0 -
I look at niches to fill in my tiny gun safe. So far,I don't have a rifle over .30 caliber. And I don't have a levergun. Which is why my next long gun purchase will be a Marlin Guide Gun.
As for handguns, all bets are off. Whatever catches my eye. I'd like to have a High Standard target pistol of some type. I'd also like to have a CZ75 full-size just 'cause.0
