Unfair injustice? You make the call!
My post on "Near Death" thread reminded me of an experience I had while working in the Mountains of Utah.
We were working on top of a mountain overlooking Bear Lake on the Utah/Idaho border. It took about an hour on ROUGH mountain roads once you left paved road to get to the worksite.
One morning on the way up we (myself and another co-worker) came upon an old man laying beside the road. I was driving a 2 ton Ford Flatbed truck and stopped to ask if he was OK.
He said "I'm in a hellava fix and I need a ride down the mountain to town." I told him that being just an employee of my company, I couldn't just decide to drive him down the mountain. But that my boss was coming up behind me in a pickup, and to flag him down.
1/2 hour later at the top my boss arrives. I asked him he saw the old man and he said "Yeah, just an old drunk. You see them up here all the time."
Later that day (about 5 hrs later) I was elected to drive the bosses pickup down to Laketown to get some burgers for the crew.
On the way down I again see the old man and stop. He was laying w/his pants around his knee's and crap ALL OVER his ass. (*he had evidently crapped his pants ). He was barely consious and obviosly dehydrated. And he smelled TERRIBLE.
I wasn't about to risk smelling up my bosses truck, but I decided to haul the old man into town. So I CAREFULLY (to avoid getting crap on me) picked him up and put him in the bed of the truck and drove down the mountain. I'll admit it must've been a rough ride for him.
Upon reaching town, I pulled into a gas station across from the burger joint and asked the attendant to call the Sheriff. I had this old bum I needed to get rid of. She looks into the bed of the truck and screams "OH MY GOD!" and runs in to call the law and an ambulance.
Turns out the old man is well known, HIGHLY respected rich guy in the area. OVER 90 yrs old. And had been out scouting deer trails w/his OLDER brother when they crashed their truck in the mountains. And he being the younger had tried to hike out for help. Making it as far as where I found him.
The sherrif and ambulance come ge the old man and word of the incident quickly travels thru the small town. Before the ambulance even arrived a crowd had gathered.
I gave my truthfull statement, just as I have here. And guess what? These people are PO'd AT ME for "treating the old man so roughly"! They refused to sell me any burgers and I was told that it would be best if I didn't come back to that town anymore.
The old man lived and helicopters found his brother alive.
So what do you think. Did I deserve to be treated like crap for saving the old man?
