No matter how many times you proofread something................

I got a sweet contact for a part time job while I work on my MBA. Did a phone interview and they asked me to email my resume.

I had to change a couple things on the resume, I looked it over and the wife looked it over and I sent it.

This morning I am looking at it and see I made an egregious spelling mistake in the first line, it is a heading and in bold!?#?#%$?%#?!@?!?!

    They will catch it. It is the name of the company.

    I might go in there with a smile and tell them about it. What the heck I don't have much to lose at this point.

    Hey man, I understand. I'm in the MBA program, too. I've got to get my resume in order by the end of February. I've been trying to find time to squeeze in some serious research, but after I've done all my research for my papers due each week, my brain is fried.

    Sorry to hear about the error. Hopefully, they won't catch it either.

    Turn it into a positive if you do get an interview. Point it out...make a joke...we're all human. Let this be an example of your work ethic...you make mistakes...don't cover them up, admit it like a man, correct them and move on. Spelling can be corrected, but honesty and integrity are personality traits. Just don't make a big deal of it.

    dont feel bad. I submitted my warrant officer packet quite a few years ago. We had to write a paragraph on why we should be selected to be a warrant.
    My field is weapons repair so here is the first line of my paragraph:


    I am an Ordinance soldier...... damned spellcheck[B)]

    I used to go through a lot of resumes as CFO-VP Finance of a couple of mid-size companies during my working years. I can tell you it has more to do with the personality of the reviewer I used to laugh at those kinds of mistakes, it was the content of the resume and the way it was presented and how the applicant fit the requirements of the job that I was concerned with. A couple of minor mistakes were acceptable to me.

    But I have known folks who would not have found a minor spelling mistake acceptable. Maybe you don't want to work for those kind of people anyway, they will focus on the details and not the big picture. Hard folks to please and not fun to work with.

    If the job you seek is with a educational institution or a big company with a large HR department a spelling error can be more of a problem. If the resume flows through the hands of the person you will work for a spelling error should not be a make or break issue.

    If you can follow up with a phone call and advise them of the error I think it would be a plus.

    Tell them that if they hire you, the first thing you wish to propose is a name change for the company.

    Call them. Somebody might be smart enough to realize that you can be accountable for a simple human error. The majority of resumes go into the trash anyway. A call will draw attention to your resume and could help you. Also, the company will know that you likely did the resume yourself.

    Don't be so hard on yourself. Bass aren't known for their spelling ability anyway.

    My wife had a misspelling in her objective statement. She didn't catch it until after a few interviews.

    what if you spelled it correctly, but just think you didn't?

    Send in a corrected copy. Explain your mistake. I can assure you that if your resume is what they are looking for in terms of your qualifications, then they would not take offence at your error. In fact, they might well think better of you for catching it yourself.

    They might just think your pretty clever. Something like that could actually get your resume circulated a little quicker if you think about it for a moment.[:D]

    It's probably of no consolation, but I've read high dollar books from famous authors and reputable publishers with typographical errors in them. One would think that with "spell-check" on computers and the tedious work of copy editors, such would not slip through--but they do. So relax. You're no better--and certainly no worse--than the BEST!

    Tell them that in a act of kindness you improved the compsny name and won't even charge them for your time and trouble.
