.44 magnum fmj
(forgive my ignorance)
does such thing as .44 magnum FMJ exist? i've been planning on doing some hiking, scouting and hunting in northern parts of california and got myself a 626 S&W in .44 magnum for a side arm in case i walked up on a hungry furry animal. would softpoint be enough to penetrate it's big thick skin or skull?

I have carried my .44 Ruger redhawk plenty of times in North CA on hog hunting trips. 240gr jacketed soft points are far more than enough for worst case scenario. 0 -

There is FMJ 44 mag, but you'd probably be better off by a heavier hard cast lead bullet.
I'm sure someone will be along shortly to recommend a brand - my 44 (a Ruger carbine) can only use jacketed bullets.0 -

cool. thanks. that's what i am carrying now, just was wondering whether there was something... with better penetration and if it's indeed needed at all. googling for an hour didn't give me any results.
well, maybe i should google up something on ballistic characteristics too.0 -

I load a 44 caliber 240 Speer TMJ bullet in my 44 mag with a V-E-R-Y stout load of 2400. It penetrates very well.
I also use a very hard cast Keith style 240 Bullet pushed by even more 2400.
Either load will pop a hole in a bear skull.0 -
