Settle a bet: .22 caliber hunting

My brother claimed that it was legal to hunt deer with a .22 in NY State based on the regs which say that there is no limit (high or low) on caliber. However it does outlaw rimfire, which I say for all intents and purposes eliminates .22's.

He is trying to get out of paying on this $22 bet based on the fact that there may be .22's that are centerfire and therefore he is technically correct.

Who wins the bet on whether or not it is legal to hunt deer in NY State with a .22?

    Can't speak for NY, but here in Michigan it's ant rimfire cartridge larger than 22cal OR any centerfire cartridge.
    IOW a 25cal (or larger) rimfire would be a legal deer cartridge as would a 10cal centerfire

    It is legal to hunt deer in Maine with a 22 magnum. Of course, one needs a good flashlight as an accessory.

    It must be a centerfire.

    No rim fires are legal for deer.

    BS...there is such a thing as a standard in a statement...
    If I walk into a gun shop and say, I'd like to look AT YOUR BEST .22, he may go to the safe and show me a Colt Diamondback engraved by Angelo Bee... I seriously doubt that he will turn around ans pick up that .222 Sako on the rack behind him!!! When I and any RATIONAL gun person says .22 we are referring to a .22 rimfire!!!

    Sounds like your brother either tricked you, or is crawfishing on a technicality.
    It depends heavily on the original wording of the bet.
    It's kinda like the old "I can predict the score of the Super Bowl, before the game starts" bet trick. The score BEFORE the game starts is obviously 0 to 0.
    It's obvious that you believed the bet refered to the .22 rimfire. So IMO if the bet was "It's illegal to hunt deer w/a .22". In which case I think most people would assume refered to the .22 rimfire. I would say that you won.
    But if it was worded "It's illegal to hunt deer w/a .22 "caliber" rifle". He greened you and you lost.

    The 5mm Craig is centerfire - it replaced the 5mmRemingtonRimfireMagnum which was far before it's time.. and went obsolete before it got started - it took the .17 calibers in modern time to kick the idea in again.

    If 5mmRemMag came out 20 years later than it did - I'd bet we've seen a whole lot of it now.
