military question
How long is it usually before being deployed overseas when the orders come? Do the orders come by phone or written in the mail?

i was a commisioned officer,USMC, in the seventies. my id card says indefinite on it. i would like to go to iraq and help,maybe remf, front lines i don't care. i know the military is shorthanded but they tell me i have to have 20 by age 60 to get back in which won't happen. i don't care about retirement. i'm in reasonable shape for my age. i don't care if i'm cannon fodder. i could relieve some young people. has anyone heard of age waivers for my situation? is there something the locals aren't aware of? 0 -

I was watching an HBO special about fighting in Afghanistan and noticed that one of the US soldiers had Glock pistol, also noticed that different types of rifles were being used.
One soldier had what looked like an m4 ar15 with MAGPUL hardware and what looked like a hunting scope mounted on it. Another soldier looked like he had an older m16 with only peep sights.
Question; can a soldier use his own weapon of choice? Can a soldier use his own personel weapon?0 -
A member of my wifes family is in the USMC. But won't be for long. He re-enlisted at least twice that I know of. And wants to again.
BUT THEY WON"T LET HIM. Apparently it stems from this
He was a recruiter and got a DUI while driving a Govt. vehicle. They busted him in rank and moved him out of recruiting, back to regular service. And now say he (as I understand it) hasn't met USMC promotion requirements to stay in.
I had no idea there was a "promotion requirement" in the military. And I find it odd that no worse than his (one that we know of)offense was, that particularly in a time of war, they are in essence, kicking him out.

If the military doesn't stop our government from completely destroying our constitution, shouldn't it be considered "Dereliction of Duty?"
I mean, to me, it seems that they should be forced to storm the capitol or be brought up on charges, right?

I really want to be in the military but I want to at least finish High School first and maybe even College. What are the benefits of finishing College and being in the military?

I MIGHT want to try to be a sniper for the Rangers, please dont make fun of me because it seems unrealistic. What would I have to do to try and become that?

Being in the service 1n the '70s puts you at least somewhere in your 50s, as am I (58), and I also am in "reasonable" shape for my age. If they have "lite" training program for 50+ year young men, count me in.[;)] If the training is anything like the '60s you can count me out, and I don't think I'm up to humpin' 80+ lbs. in 100* heat all day. I could sure ride or fly around though. Give me a scoped M14 or one of those larger caliber scoped ARs I see in the videos, I can still shoot. I too believe the old vets would make a significant contribution, what the hay, the kids are gone, the old lady was gone 25 years ago, I've made what I need, lets go.[:D] 0 -
You might have a shot at a private security contractor in country.
No chance for U.S. Military.
Just wait a couple of years (or months, who knows) when radical Islam makes its' move here in the states, and you could have plenty of action right in your own neighborhood!

Because if it weren't for ya'll, I would HAVE to be over there fighting and the service is still a last resort for me. If you have a needed specialty like Medical Doctor or something, they will waive you in. There have been news stories of 70 year olds going back:

I would and could train if that is were I was needed. But to be honest I don't know that I would be happy doing that.
I have to be honest. There was nothing like the adrenilan rush from being up in the middle of it. And a part of me does miss it.
And I do believe that a seasoned combat vet has alot to offer to a newbe up on the lines. I know it did for me as my unit had 3 Vietnam vets in it. They had alot of wisdom to share with us by their actions as well as their words.0 -
I'm 50 and spent the last year in Iraq. My boss is six years older. Call your local Navy recriuter. My experience is you do not have to have any construction experience to be an officer in the Seabees.... 0 -
