Remember Bob Hope Entertaining the Troops?
Suffice to say that no one any time soon is going to step up and pick up where this great American left off. He was responsible for so many stars visiting and entertaining our troops all over the world, especially at Christmas.

Bob Hope was great!!! But Glen Miller died while out their entertaining the troops. Audrey Hepburn carried messsages for the underground in her ballet shoes @ 14 yrs old. And many actors and sports stars were out there in the mud fighting alongside the troops. And do you remember this guy?
But to me "When it comes to supporting the troops" the most impressive person was the America house wife of WWII who managed to keep her pants on and wait for her man to get back safely home to her. Today 75% of the troops come home to find that their spouse was doing it with another the entire time they were gone and they were living off the money that they are required by law to send home.0 -

Not to burst your bubble...but housewives in the 40's were almost as bad as housewives in the 2000's! At least that is what was said on the History channel when they aired an episode of the "History of Sex" dealing with the WW2 time frame.0 -

What always impressed me about Bob Hope's shows was that they were like Jerry Lewis' Telethons in that the next shows were planned for just as soon as the last ones ended. He lined up talent back then - always had a Jayne Mansfield, Joy Lansing, Ann Margaret or a number of other gorgeous starlets with him, well-known comics (Jerry Colonna is one who comes to mind) and had enough self-deprecating material to bring the house down at every stop. Before she got completely wierd, Anita Bryant, a mainstay of his tours, would really stop the show with Silent Night.
I would look into the eyes of faces of the soldiers and sailors in the audiences and see how much this meant to them. Meanwhile, all these folks, including the operations and technical crews, gave up their entire holiday season to do this. And back then it wasn't a "photo op" kind of thing for them.
Kudos to those stars - no matter their political party affilliation - today who actually give up their holidays to bring some legitimate joy and fun - and nothing alterior - to our troops overseas.0 -
Bob Hope is certainly to be commended for his efforts in Americas Wars. There are others as well. I never saw Bob Hope in Viet Nam, his shows were always in the rear at the larger base camps, but I did see/meet Martha Raye on a firebase once.[8D] 0 -
Bob Hope was genuine and a great boost to morale. When I was in the Navy I was able to see one of his last shows, which was during Christmas of 1972 onboard the USS Midway in Singapore. I need to break out the slides I took and take a trip down memory lane. 0 -
I saw Colin Quinn from Saturday Night Live. He put on a good show. I think part of the issue with troop entertainment today is that we lack large numbers of good entertainers to entertain the troops. Just my two cents... 0 -

I was honored to see the Bob Hope Christmas Show in December, 1963, at Tachikawa AFB in Japan. He really put on a great show. When I got back to the States, I wrote him and thanked him for the show I attended and all the other performances he put on over the years. I received a reply from him (at least it was signed by him) thanking me for my letter and my service. There will never be another like him. He was truly the GI's friend and supporter. 0 -
There's lots of bands and famous people that have tried to do "thier part". I remember Kid Rock and Pam Anderson, as well as the band "Three Doors Down" a few various comedians, Dick Chaney, Jessica Biel(sp) and many lesser known names (or names that didn't seem important to me). Many of the big movie studios also try to do thier part by releasing thier newest movies either ahead of thier official release date to AFN, or right at thier release date. I would say that Bob Hope did a great job as a role model for this sort of moral boosting activity, but it is far from extinct. 0 -
In 1982 we had the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders aboard my ship (USS Enterprise) in the middle of a Westpac between CHristmas and New Years day. A morale raiser to say the Least !!!

Had Bob onboard the Uss Iowa in 87-88. Wonderful guy. Got to go to the Ofc. mess and neet him personally. Also had the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders.[:p]
Mlincoln, I would say that 75% is a little high. Probably in the 50-65% range. Been deployed enough to know that. That's why I never had a girlfriend or got married while in the service. Just kept in touch with a few ladies and enjoyed my time with them while in port.0 -

His name is Jody, and he's been "serviceing" the wives/girlfriends of Military men for a long time. Don't bet that the WWII babes kept their pants on when he was around.[;)]0 -
Yes, I saw him and his troupe on Christmas 1953. Along with everyone else, I always had the greatest respect for him. He was a great morale booster.
Marilyn Monroe caused the GIs to behave like blithering boobs when it was announced she was also visiting us. Not wanting to be seen as part of that craziness I didn't go. I regret that now.0 -
