Dominick Dunne's program is on now. I haven't really been watching it, but it is background noise for me. Anyway, something did catch my attention. In the case of Claudine Longet shooting Spider Savage in Aspen a few years ago.
A cop unloaded the murder weapon at the crime scene including the spent cartridge. Since the cop was not a certified firearms expert, the judge wouldn't allow the murder weapon or spent cartridge to be used as evidence.
I think that is taking the "expert witness" thing a little too far.

It was 30 years ago when the shooting happened.

Somewhere around here we have a blackjack a cop used to kill a bad guy in a Chicago alley during the Depression, sometime. My dad found it in some weeds after the guy's body was carried off and used it for a toy for years - stitched leather, spring handle and nicely crafted lead sap under the leather at the business end.
... I guess it's been too long to do much good if we turned it over to the cops, eh?
