  When I was 7 or 8 I met two ex-slaves who lived in a converted chicken coop
  on their (my parent's friend's) farm in Lancaster County, PA. They would only
  cook their chickens over an open fire outside. Neither could read or write ...
  love to talk to them today. According to them, they were from a rice plantation
  in Mississippi and remember being freed by Yankee soldiers in 'blue clothes.'[:D]
