Why must we speak no ill of the dead?
Let me start this thread with a disclaimer and request. This thread is not intended to dishonor Blackhorn and please don't turn it into a thread bashing him.
With the recent passing of controvercial GB member Blackhorn I noticed a social rule being observed by most members and even stated outright by Saxonpig.

It's expected to put aside one's differences and let hard feelings go upon the death of a fellow human being. As much as we may disagree or even dislike someone if they should pass from this world before we do the least we can do is be respectful, speak well of them, and express our concern for the family and friends.
Why has this become a social expectation? If someone was disliked during life why do they get a "pardon" upon their death? I don't buy into it.

I am not sure how far back this custom goes, but isn't there something in biblical sense there, like a dead man is now being judged by G-d and who are we, the meek to take on G-d's work.
I am not sure whether I've heard of this before or came up with it myself, I am sure it ain't original.0 -

It is all about "RESPECT", and how one was raised. To speak ill of the dead speaks volumes about how someone was brought up.

Yes it is, to some; I couldn't care less.0 -

You cared enough not to use it.0 -

You know, for someone demanding the right to speak badly about others, you don't seem to take it very well, do you?
"Why must we speak no ill of the dead?" -bigtire
The fact that you even ask such a question suggests that you don't understand basic human decency. Why do you want to criticize someone who can't respond? Why do you want to argue with the dead? It's not really much of a debate, is it?
Besides, I didn't call you any names. I believe speaking ill of the recently deceased is petty behavior and I said you were free to be petty if that's what you wanted. If THIS makes you angry you definitely need thicker skin.0 -
"Why must we speak no ill of the dead?"
If your parents failed to get the point across when you were a kid, forget it. It is way over your head.0 -
G-d isnt a bad word. its a hebrew belief that you cant presume to know him well enough to spell out his entire name on this side of life.
rule of thumb...if youre not willing to say it to his familes faces at the funeral home, you dont say it at all.[;)]0 -
It is not good t speak ill of the dead, because they can sneak out from under your bed when you're asleep, eat you, and cast you into hell.
Just try it !!

Again, the following responses have nothing to do with Blackhorn. He was neither my freind nor my enemy. I really didn't know him. I just wanted to explore the social taboo of speaking ill of the dead.
Demanding the right? I need not demand what I may do already.
Why do I want to criticize someone who can't respond?
I don't. But I also see no need to "polish a turd" as stink foot so eloquently put it. If someone was an azz, everyone knows it, especially the family. Why paint them as someting they were not?
Why do I want to argue with the dead?
I don't want to argue with them. I also see no need to lie about how great they were.0 -

Maybe that's why I've never been asked to do a eulogy.[;)]0 -

Yep, call a spade a spade. Don't think its feudin' with the dead, but if you didn't like 'em, you ain't got to act like you're sorry they are gone.0 -

Trinity,
You are absolutely correct about it showing how someone was brought up.
I was brought up to respect what was worth respecting. Not simply follow convention and mindlessly follow what someone else feels is acceptable.
I was brought up to be honest. With myself and others. If something is right, well party down. If not, either change it or get the hell away from it. Just being recently dead imparts no magical change in a person's previous demeanor.
I was brought up to be compassionate. No need to talk bad about a dead person unless it comes up in conversation.
I was brought up to be a realist. Ancient taboos and superstition were fine for our uneducated ancestors. Burying corpses with rings or other valuables is foolish. Just ask King Tut.
Not busting your balls, just expressing another way to look at it. A person that shows respect to a corpse and never showed any to the person when alive should just ask themselves why?0 -
Dropping dead is nothing special since it will happen to each and everyone of us in due time. 0 -
Yep - I don't spend anytime wringing my hands over the dead.
If somebody asks me what I thought of him/her, why should I make up a lie?
... as far as their kids/wife asking me ... it's never happened. If it does ... I'll
be sure to report back the second I break one of the Ten Commandments and
make up a whopper and break Commandment IX Thou shalt not bear false
witness against thy neighbor.
... I always tell the truth.[:D]0
