Probably going to be in South Bend area in a few
weeks.
Business and pleasure. One day of business in that 'Big Windy City By The Lake'
and then an R&R on a friend's farm in Buchanan, MI. Usually we go as far up to
Holland for an afternoon and as far southeast as Shipshwanna, IN.
My childhood friend, 'Mickey' has a son, Mike, who, along with his family - make
up 'The Balos Family' - a soon to be (officially) a professional Bluegrass Gospel
group. Gale and I haven't seen them for a few years and want to see them perform.
Every once in a while, we get a hanker'n for that 'down home fix' and head for
Buchanan. The last time we were there we rode in their 'Founder's Day Parade - in
the back of that old Ford pick up (along with about a hundred tractors and some
HS marching bands) http://www.thebalosfamily.com/ that is shown in that family
photo. An incredible coincidence is that my great, great grandfather founded the
town ... and the family mill - McCoy's Mill, still stands over McCoy Creek. I've been
visiting Mickey since he moved back to Buchanan, in 1963. Folks there call us
'The California People' (never have decided if that was a good or a bad thing)!
... but they all seem to like us - especially Gale - and that's a good thing!
We're going to do some distribution help for Mike and family and give their group
a leg up, where we can. Anyone interested in joining us/meeting up with us for
coffee/bresakfast/dinner drop me an e-mail. Summer is for fun.
Around October 1, I'll - just me/no Gale - be in Manhattan, then on to Philadelphia
for a few days, then to D.C. and somewhere in Maryland for a few days. Invitation's
open there, too.[:D]

Zip, Shipshewana is only a short distance from LaGrange where my fathers family owned two farms. My father is buried around Stroh a short distance outside of LaGrange.
I was born in Kendallville IN which is not that far from Shipshewana IN. My Great Great Grandfather Doctor CB Goodwin built the first hospital in Kendallville IN. He was very well known in the area and lived and practiced as a physican until 97 years of age.
Shipshewana is in the heart of Amish Country and there is lots of fun things to see. The center of midwest farm land and mostly corn fed white folks!
Have a good trip and if you run into any of my relatives protect your wallet!0 -
Well I be ****. I lived west of Shippy in Goshen for many of year. Will be up there in Elkhart at friends over Labor Day going to the Auburn Auction. Fished in lake shipshewanna with the AMISH for years. 0 -

Well, Lee, I'm astounded! I wish that topic had come up at McMenamins! We always take
a side trip to Shipshewana whenever we are out Buchanan way! We saw it before they
had their last 'big fire' and haven't seen the new live threater there. Mickey knows the
owner pretty well, as well as the Rosebud Raceway owner, up there north of Buchanan,
along the old St. Joe River. Matter of fact, Mickey's spread is right next to the raceway!

Mickey wired the place - he's a supervisor lineman, now, for the county up there.
Small world, eh?
That's sure a pretty part of Indiana! Always a welcome drive through that country!
