I have seen a lot of shooters that claim they just can't get the velocities they should with hand loading data from several component manufacturers. This has become more noticeable in more recent hand loading data due to insurance liabilities and because modern guns are much stronger than some of the older guns that still use the same cartridge but cannot handle the high pressures of some of the new stronger guns. The simple truth is that the company printing the loading data doesn't know what gun you are loading for and they can't rely on the customer's common sense to know what his fire arm can or cannot handle. If you have a new ruger or freedoms arms revolver in 45 colt it can take 50,000 cup with out problems but if you load a 50,000 cup load into a 70 year old revolver it will probably blow up in your face. The loading data is for the weakest gun that might be used to avoid lawsuits from hand loaders that can't comprehend the strength difference in older and newer guns. Loading data for some older military rifles has been reduced dramatically from their original military loadings to a very weak powder puff load for liability purposes. The 8mm Mauser is a good example of this .The military loaded the 8mm to 2900fps with a 190 Gr bullet. More powerful than the 3006. Modern data and factory loads are 2400fps with the same bullet. Some European companies still make hot loads for the 8MM but here in North America the 8mm is loaded to pedestrian velocities making just slightly more powerful than a 30-30.
It is all about making bullets that the weakest of the older guns can handle with out blowing up.
