Illegal Wanted
Parents of Hit-and-Run Victim Speak Out
(Columbia) - State troopers say they're looking for a man who they say hit a van carrying four children and three adults Saturday night in Orangeburg County.
That night, eight-year-old Jamie Plummer was riding home from a trip to a horse show with her family and another family, when troopers say 27-year-old Isriel Rodriguez slammed into their van. Then, they say, he left the scene.
Jamie's family members have been treated and released. But the eight-year-old remains in a medically induced coma at Palmetto Richland.
Jamie's father, Troy Plummer, says Jamie and his wife received injuries. Their four-year-old daughter was in her car set, and was not seriously hurt.
Troy says his daughter did better late Tuesday, but she's still recovering from serious injuries.
"I can't wait to see her eyes open...so I can hug her, kiss her, tell her I love her," Troy says.
He says his daughter loves horses and softball. Tuesday night, his daughter's team wore armbands in her honor during their game.
Also in the car that night--the Price family. Fifty-two-year-old Jackson and his 13-year-old son, Jack, still feel the pain of Saturday night's car crash.
"It was so quick and it was over as soon as it started," Jackson said.
Jack's sister, Sarah, and the Plummers were in the van when they were turning onto their street, Dogwood Drive, from U.S. 21 and the car behind them slammed right into the rear.
"So I started counting to make sure everybody was in the car, everybody was okay, and we got to the back where Sarah and Jack and Jamie were and I saw everybody in the back but Jack," Jackson recalled. "Hollered his name and he said, "Over here," and that was the best sounding thing I ever heard that night, to hear him talking."
Jackson then noticed Jamie wasn't moving. He said they later learned she had suffered severe internal head injuries and needed to be airlifted to Palmetto Health.
Once everyone was accounted for, the driver spotted the suspect standing in the middle of the road. Seconds later the guy took off on foot and has been missing ever since.
"We just want to find this guy and we want Jamie to be okay," Jackson pleaded.
Highway Patrol said they now know Rodriguez ran because he's in the country illegally. While that search continues, a family tries to heal for their own--and for the ones who need it most.
"Don't take life too fast," said Sarah. "Live life." "And it can go in an instant," added her father.
Rodriguez is wanted on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury. Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call Crimestoppers at 1-888-559-TIPS. You'll be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
