You should look for one that has the latest processor that will execute DOS commands. I think looking for "DOS" machine probably limits what you will find. I think DOS will run on 286, 386, and 486 machines, as well as the earlier processors.

    What format is your software on?? 8", 5 1/4", 3 1/2" floppies ??

I really think you are making this project much more difficult than it needs to be.

What exactly are you going to do with the machine ??

If you have a laptop already you can buy the DOS software for it and load it in...

The laptop is needed to program (modern two way radios). Some have said DOS mode on windows will work, but even though you can boot it in DOS the radio recognizes it and will not work.(One radio tech said it was to fast). My format is on a 3.5 floppy, I would have thought these old computers would be shoved back every where. I guess if I didnt need one so badly they would probably be every where. Kind of like buying a $3000.00 Lawn tractor then not having a lawn to mowe. I thought I may check at the Good Will store and if they have one (and Im sure they dont) buying it and making a donation. That seems to be my last option. Doug your correct when you say Ive made this harder on myself. Beth, are you saying I can buy original DOS software and run it on any of our computers without removing XP? Or would the radio's still recognize its not DOS?

Told you that it wouldn't be all that hard.

Don't other folks with the same radios have solutions for you ??

No actually no one has Kenwood Software in my area, so DOS is not needed for their programing. Icoms are Microsoft 98 programable and I have that covered. So to get them programmed I would have to send them off and one quote was $35.00 a radio to program since I didnt buy from them. And you need to be able to change things on them as well from time to time. I dont care what kind or model computer as long as its just DOS. I have looked on Ebay and had they dont have anything now except for repair or parts. I had my aunt buy one from Ebay for $10.00 + shipping and it did not have a power cord, someone here found me one on Ebay for about $35.00 after shipping. After my wife got it booted up it worked less than an hour and the screen went blank. I really dont know what else to do? But I am going to lower the stress level before I have a CVA.

46270, has had it pretty rough lately, I remember him asking for prayer here a couple of times. I wouldnt feel right bothering him with my problems. I would like to thank you all for your help and putting up with my babbling. Its nice to know you can always come here and find help for most any problem.

when you get the dos prompt in windows, you actually are not in dos as we know it you are still in windows, they did this to keep people out, so they would quit screwing up their pc

try putting in a start up disc, and then get the dos prompt from there, depending on the version of dos you will be able to run from there
