    What about the other side?? I love the Flur-de-les you did there. I like how you used a lighter stain to fill in and show off your work.

    thats why i ask these things! working up paterns, (wife and daughter wanted to see this one done) and what better way to decide what goes in the future choice catalog than public (or forum) opinion?!

    i rather like the cross-hatching. gives the indication of larger diamond shapes, the circled border resembles brass buttons, overall shape gives reference to shields carried during arthurian times. if i had a rifle, i think that would be very nice ornamentation.

    I REALLY like the second....you can get your hands on THOUSANDS of the plain, shiney, nothing special about them stocks....all day....every day. The one of a kind number you have in the AFTER picture is worth more bucks when you are going to buy or sell a gun. Less like the herd is always better!

    I'm gonna agree with LF here. You see Picture #1 every single day. Picture #2 actually gets your attention.

    I would, however, put a high-gloss finish on it.

    I like the lighter colored wood on any stock. If you are just practising have you thought about staining the checkering work a darker shade. Like alot of leather work that you see. Regardless, you did a nice job.

    I personally prefer a smooth stock, otherwise, you did a nice job.

    high gloss finish is standard when i do a stock that for anyone, but i ususlly dont waste the materials on just the "idea" junk stocks (the catagory this one falls into)
    i also do the rubbed oil finish for older stuff that gives just a nice sheen without the high gloss which often runs into quite a bit of time

    Looks like proof that some folks should NOT do 'home-gunsmithing' !!!
    as bad as the 'before' looks , the 'after' looks worse , and add in the simple fact that 'home-gunsmithing' usually hurts the overall value of a gun .
