Surface/shallow drive outboards
Anyone here own one? Or used one? My brother is constantly talking about getting one for duck hunting and stuff. They look neat, but how do they do in water that isnt 6 inches deep? I heard in water with any amount of current they dont travel well because of not really having the prop in the water. Is this true?

I have a 16 hp Go Devil. It is air cooled two cylinder Briggs(HONDA avaliable). In deep water it will push my 17 ft flat bottom aluminum boat 15-17 mph. The Go Devil design has the prop on a shaft about 4 ft behind the boat. If the boat will float or silghtly drag it will run fine. A friend has a Gator Tail 35 hp Honda. His boat will run 25 mph. This design is closer to a traditional outboard with the prop less than a foot from the boat. It will push the boat across mud flats, the thickest grass with ease and as long as the prop has mud to dig into you will be moving. Reverse is also avaliable on this model. The Gator Tail will be better suited for hunting because of the overall length. Current is not an issue, we run the river with no trouble to go catfishing. And on both of these the prop is always under water unless you pick it up. 0 -
Thanks for the info. My brother was looking in the 35hp Gatortail. And i have thought about getting one myself, but i dont want to have any trouble when i go up to the sulphur river. 0 -
You wont have any problems but they are a little expensive for the hp you get vs. an outboard. 0 -
