Tomorrow in Tulsa Okla. they are going to unviel a 1957 Plymouth Belvedeere that was buried in a vault under a downtown street 50 years ago. They opened the vault yesterday and found that: A. The car was sitting in water up to it's fenders (basically 1/2 submerged). B. Judging by high water marks in the vault, the car has at some point been completely submerged.
The car is wrapped in some kind of protective wrapping. So far we don't know,or haven't been told how effective 1957 technology wrapping has been against water.
I'm betting we have a ruined rust bucket. What do you think?
I wouldn't be surprized if they weren't prepared for this and have a standby car to present to the public.

    Having been the proud(?) owner of a '57 Plymouth Savoy, my bet is that it will be a rust bucket. Unless they did better at rustproofong Belevederes than Savoys.

    Be sure to tell us the results, with pix if you can. And the name of your local newspaper, so we can look it up.

    They uncovered and went thru the old car live on Tulsa Tv tonite. The car is in bad shape. Proclaimed unrestorable by experts. a total rust bucket. But some the contents, sealed in a "time capsule" (basically a tank like on an air compressor) were in Ex condition. A 48 star American flag and other local memrobilia. A local (apparently famous at the time) Tulsa musician placed a case of beer in the trunk in 1957. Some of the corroded, but still full cans were found in the remains of the front seat. No doubt floated there during times when the car was submerged in water. What a shame they didn't have the tech to protect the car in 1957. There are some websites on it. But none so far as I've seen has any pics of the uncovered car yet. Search for "the buried car".

    I think that's a little extreme. But it was pretty unrealistic to think that they could bury a new car and that it would survive 50 years underground. At least w/1950's tech.

    Even with 50's technology if done correctly the car should have been just fine. One would think that there was a civil engineer that worked for the city at that time that they could have consulted and done the water proofing correctly.
