eboydell: My 30-40 Krag ... what a Babe!
Not to hijack that other thread, I'll start this one.
Krag's have always held a special place in my life - my grandfather used one almost
exclusively as a deer rifle, as a young boy/young man. I wish I had his, but his son (my
uncle) took it ... and sold it the same day he died.[V]
I always wanted one to replace that one but always 'needed' something else a little
more.

Well, here's a pic of me - about 20 pounds ago - with my Krag carbine..

condition - met him at the range that afternoon - the first slide/closure of the action I

Work the bolt of a Krag sometime - one of the smoothest actions that you'll ever find -
like the Swedish Gustuv, actually.
So I bought it - bought a box of ammo - after gasping at the price - and took her out
to shoot it at various distances.
She's absolutely spot on accurate at 200 yards - my son's can do better than that - and a delight to shoot. We are a family of reloaders so the ammo's not bad anymore - Midway's got all the components - she's a dream to shoot - and of course a very smooth action!
The cartridge velocity (2200+ fps) and hitting power (2000+ ft/lbs).
The Kraig, and 7mm mauser have the characteristic that at about 600 yds, they are slow enough that the round wanders and hasn't the energy to be deadly.
Wandering off topic for a sec ... if you can do it, a 45-70 is a 1500 yd killer, and stays on point out to that range. Similarly, the 30-06 military spec is a good 1000 yd killer, but the similar, but slightly slower 762 nato/308 starts running out of energy and accuracy at about 750-800 yds which made a big difference for our snipers in 'nam.
Back to the Krag - like a Mauser ... but different. I really like it (them) - maybe looking for a full sized Krag in the upcoming year ... finding time to enjoy it is the problem, at the moment.
If you can ... get one ... you'll see what I'm trying to say ... before and after the first shot!
