    i would say any rifle a Sniper holds is a sniper rifle. A sniper doesnt fire at anything that moves, he picks his targets carefully, or has his targets picked for him, carefully.

    "Sniper rifle" is just an arbitrary term, it really has no meaning.

    Accuracy makes a Sniper Rifle. Long distance accuracy. Any modern bolt action pencil barrel will not do the long range accuracy needed to do consistant grouping. Shooter must know their weapon but the weapon also makes the shooters job easier. Read the article and notice it is a 50 shot group. PSG-1 is not the most accurate sniper gun out there but it is the most accurate automatic sniper weapon. Price is not up to date on the article. Only around 400 of these were imported into the US and most are in Law enforcement. Civilian version was the SR9T in which only 225 made importation. My SR9T is pictured below . It is still unfired and someday I might just take her out and run a few rounds thru it. Its statistics match the PSG-1 only it does not have a forward assist.

    "Sniper rifle" as a noun means nothing. It is,in fact, an adjective followed by a noun. If you take your trusty Daisy bb gun an snipe with it, it is a sniper rifle. Likewise, when Daniel Boone swings his flintlock and busts out some redskin's teeth with the rife butt it is an "assult rifle."

    A "sniper rifle" is a weapon used by a trained sniper. On the other hand, to the ragheads, a sniper is any one who can make an AK go "bang" Other than that it is simply an advertising term used to get "wanna be smipers" To buy a weapon.

    Old pic. Already upgraded. I have shot the night scope on the HK 91 and pretty much happy with it. It will transfer onto the SR9T easily. Just don't know how much use shooting critters at night I will be doing and just may sell it. Difference in a Sniper weapon and a regular weapon is simple. Regular weapons may take lots and lots of rounds to do the job intended, whereas the sniper has a designated target and mission. Don't try hitting a man size target at 750 yd with a common out of the box 700 Remington. Now buy a HB PSS or 40X and try it. I won't just hit the target I will call my shot.

    ATN 440 Second Generation +. On a moonlit light you can see 300 yd + easily and clearly. Dark night, 200 yd for target aquisition. Scope weighs 4 #. On the Hk 91 with scope it tips the scales at 17.5 Pounds. Tote that around for awhile...

    To me its the person, you could be sniper with an AK. Its more of a technique then the weapon, although the weapon is a big part. I would say though a rifle thats in the neighborhood of a 30 caliber and probably accurate out to 800yds

    A "sniper rifle" is any rifle used for sniping, ie shooting human beings at a distance from a concealed position.

    While just about any hunting rifle *could* be used as a sniper rifle (and many have), the main criterion would be accuracy.

    In general, sniper rifles are *usually* scoped bolt-action rifles of medium to high power with external camouflage . . .but see above.

    Also in general, the shooter is FAR more important than the rifle.

    It bugs me when people say they want to get one. I ask what kind and they just say sniper rifle like I'm supporsed to know what the hell they're talking about.

    Everything said here is true - except (forgive me if I missed it), during the Second World War, they were hand picked from the standard arms from the countries involved. Nowadays, they are designed/made specifically for the purpose of a sniper rifle.

    Typical World War II-era sniper rifles were generally standard-issue rifles (hand-picked for accuracy) with a 2.5x telescopic sight and cheek-rest fitted, with the bolt turned down (if necessary) to allow operation with the scope affixed. By the end of the war, forces on all sides had specially-trained soldiers equipped with sniper rifles, and they have played an increasingly important role in military operations ever since.

    Hand picked 'sniper rifles' of WWII included:

    Mosin-Nagant M91/30 used by the Soviet Union and Finland

    Mauser K98k used by Germany

    Lee-Enfield No 4 Mk I (T) used by the UK and Commonwealth
    SMLE Mk III* (HT) used by Australia

    Springfield M1903A4 used by the United States

    Arisaka Type 97 used by Japan
