500 S&W Rifle?

I am trying to decide what rifle I want, the cheapest one that I am strongly considering is the New England Arms single shot 500 magnum. I was just wondering if the 500 S&W is flat shooting. I will be using this on deer and black bear. Maybe elk if it's big enough. Your thoughts?

  No, it's definately not big enough, not even for deer.

  Just picked that same gun up two days ago [:p]
  Paid $246.oo for it out-the-door . I have the 4" and the 8 3/8" S&W revolvers and load my own ammo for them , a LOT cheaper to load em then it is to buy factory ammo . Anyway , I figured it would be a neat little gun to put on the front of the four wheeler when I'm out riding around the " Strippins " here in the great state of Pa. [:)]
  Didn't get a chance to shoot it yet , but when I do I'll be shootin a 350 gr Sierra J.H.P. and IMHO plenty big enough for whitetails and blackies

  Is it a pretty flat shooting round? That's my only question because I know it's quite powerful.

  I had one of the New England single shot .500S&W, got rid of it. At 50 yards, out of the box it was hitting 2 foot low. I adjusted sights all the way up and it was 10-14 inches low. I then aimed high on center and guess what, i was 1-2 inches from center. Though i was using Magtech 400 grain load. Dang thang thumped harder than my 12 gauge 870 with 3' inch magnums. My opinion it has alot of drop, thats why i sold it. But if ya put a scope on to compinsate at would drop a deer or elk definetly at 50-75 yards. Hate to see the exit hole through a deer, if not shot in shoulder.

  From my experience I would say you're problem was the Magtech rounds. I've shoot hundreds of rounds off the shelf from numerous manufacturers and the Magtechs often left me with that where the hell did that round go feeling.
  
  One thing good about the Magtech is that they're inexpensive to buy and reload well. Our reloads group consistently well on paper.

  I had a used one in my hands at the last gunshow. I passed when the seller told me about the recoil.

  Thanks for all your replies, they have been really helpful. I have considered the 460 but i dont think they make handi rifles in 460 S&W yet. Thanks .375, I'll be interested to see how yours performs.
