Is a college education, like a 2 year degree required to become a police officer? Or could you become an officer and work while you get your degree?

Not required in Michigan. 0 -
im not in great shape, but if i could pass some kind of course could i still get in? 0 -
i just took the physical and written test for topeka last friday. it was really easy. turned in the application and now waiting for the interview. 0 -
what did the physical part entail? im heavy but i can still run and jump and roll. I see heavy cops all the time. 0 -
it was a 440 yd course with stairs and hurdles. then push and pull 80 lbs, go over about a 3 foot bar 5 times and carry a bag that weighed about 80 lbs. you have 4 or so minutes. then you had to squeeze a glock trigger 12 times in each hand in 15 seconds.
the written test was even easier. it was like those junior high placement tests.0 -
im pretty sure i could handle that. Any one know any specifics about florida, tampa if it helps. If i flew out to somewhere and took all the tests and passed, and got everything squared away, i would have no problem moving. 0 -
in missouri and most states college isn,t a requirement for being a law enforcement officer, it never hurts, but a 640 + hour course is required < usualy about 670 hours to cover absenses> the course covers basic law enforcement and the constitution , ppct or hand to hand, some strikes ,takedowns, some very basic jujitsu, and BUILDS survival instinct in hand to hand situations. also covered are firearms bring about 4000 rounds of pistol ammo, couple hundred 12 ga.,25<00>, 25 rifled slugs, the rest #6-8 you,re gonna be shooting clays and moving sillouettes, emergency vehicle operation want to drive 140? search and seizure, investigation, cuffing, mace its too numerous to list here -just get ready for an adventure in the service to humanity, god and country to bring justice to the innocent <AND the guilty!> check the internet for sheriffs academys and other law enforcement classes in your state, apply and do your best to fulfill your calling! good luck! 0 -
It's been a while since I went through the academy, but ours is 960 hours of training. Almost 6 months. The day is broken up with at least of 2 or 3 hours of physical training per day, which includes weight training, running, and defensive tactics.
If you are way out of shape, you probably wouldn't pass the entrance physical though. Yes, you see fat cops all the time, but they usually weren't fat when they got hired.0 -

Most depts around the country are really hurting for cops. Decide where you want to live and then just go apply. The Phoenix valley is a great place, most depts start around $45K and houses are very reasonable. I would recommend Az DPS (their State Police), Maricopa or Pinal County Sheriff, then start hitting the city depts.0 -
Education requirements for licensing vary from state to state, with the minimum sometimes being only a high school diploma, but each agency is allowed to raise this. Some mandate a set number of college hours, but these usually aren't required to be in any specific subject area. In fact, many agencies allow military service to substitute for this.
Anywhere you go the initial written and physical agility test is the easy part, meant only to weed out the obvious. Once you make it through the medical exam, background investigation, oral interview board, psychological exam, etc. the testing standards of the basic academy is where the first actual performance difficulty lies. Minimum standards are established by the state, but the difficulty of each academy can vary.
After this, with all but the smaller outfits you'll then have to make it through the agency's own field training program. Again, it varies from one place to the next, but this period is often months long. This is where you'll have to demonstrate you can apply what you learned in the academy, function within their own policies/procedures and demonstrate the ability to function outside the classroom. You'll commonly receive a muti-point written performance rating on a daily basis during this period. Within my agency this is actually where we lose most of our recruits.
With all these variables, your best course of action is to contact the agency you're interested in. They'll be more than happy to bring you up to speed on all requirements.0 -
Houston police are hiring, and always hiring it seems. I think they require 15 college credits though. 0 -
You can't apply here unless you've got your Green Card.

You must be able to fabricate evidence, cut & paste police reports together from previous police reports in the light most favorable to the police, establish probable cause good enough for a half asleep judge to sign a warrant, and be able to go long periods with only donuts and coffee for nourishment...
Bondai sent me an email and asked me to write this. I did not argue.
