Montana just signed a new law that makes it illegal for the DMV to implement the provisions of the federal Real ID Act, and requires the DMV to report directly to the governor if Homeland Security comes by trying to do it for them.

About Montana - anything west of Billings is being annexed by California, so be careful. The Sierra Club is active out there, paying college students to tie themselves to logging trucks on busy bridges (I wish I was making that up). But the vast majority of the Big Sky State is one of the most wonderful parts of our great nation.0 -

Look at the shoulder patch of any Montana Highway Patrol person. There is a set of numbers on that patch. 3-7-77. Those are the dimentions of a grave. 3 feet wide, 7 feet long, and 77 inches deep. It's left over from Montana's proud vigalante days.0 -

Miles City is the place for me! Country Music and whiskey. Bucking horse sales in May and cold beer anyday. Montana has a lot to see.
There is still a sense of fair play and justice in MT. East of Billings. Go west and granolas are thicker than dog fleas and just about as smart. I hunted out there about 15 years ago. On private land. Was warned "No don't go over that ridge or you are on Tom Brokow's place. Now over that ridge is Brook's Shield's ranch."

Having lived in Montana for nearly ten years I like to say them folks call the shots straight. When background checks became the big thing Montana fought it for a number of years. You could still buy a firearm without a background check when I left in '98. However, I like what MN does by making you get a once a year background check and a card to prove it. No cost. The Feds do a quick check each time you buy.
I know there are lots of granola's over on the Missoula side, and a few in Helena where I lived. They are usually more talk than action though when confronted head on. The biggest granola of them all, and a hypocrite to boot, is Ted. Ted was going to be generous and trade the state 12000 acres for 7000 that they had...the little catch was the 7,000 locked off the 12,000 so that if Ted decided...and he always has...that the public don't have a right to go on it. He tried that same crap with the Beaverhead River. Tried to make it so floaters(fly fishermen in float tubes and kids on inner tubes too) couldn't float straight through. As far as granola's go just shame 'em in public and show them for the yellow Ba$^@&!$ they are and you will be okay out there.
P.S. if they lock themselves to a logging truck that's when you let the chains slip...0
