haha. i laugh when kids tell me they need a 3 month break for summer, two weeks for winter, one week for spring, one week for autum, 3 days for presidents, 2 for civil rights leaders and so on. when yuo start working you get 2 weeks TOTAL !!!0 -

[:D] Isn't that the truth! The worst thing about being an Ump is making a bad call and knowing that you did it. Most especially a bad call that causes the real winners to lose the game. I know, because I've done it. It's something that you can live with, but you can't forget. The absolute worse call that I have ever witnessed was during a Texas Longhorn and Lamar Cardinal baseball game. It was the deciding game for a trip to Omaha back around 1986.
Bill Bates was on 1st or second, I forget which, and a fly ball was hammered to deep left field. Bates, representating the tying run, as I recall, and third and final out of the game, was on the move, and the Lamar left fielder, fired the fastest, textbook peg, that anyone can imagine to the catcher who was well up the baseline to take the throw and block Bates. Bates was tagged from the feet to the waist, about three feet from the plate, the Ump called him safe, and the Horns went on to win 6-5, and were given a freebie to Omaha. I'm glad I did not make that call! It is still being written about in Texas. [8D]
The good things to remember about umping is that kids get to play ball, and people get to watch! That's a hard combination to beat, Jacob, so stick with it.0 -
