So sick of "big brother"
I got a letter from DMR (Dept. of Marine Resources) about lobster landings reports that are soon to be required.
That is unless the fishermen, with very little financial capabilities to fight it, do fight and get it shut down.
They want a daily report of the number of traps hauled, where, how many pounds, and more. They state there is no reason for it, except to guage the number of lobsters on bottom. They already know how many pounds are caught each year, how many traps each fisherman is allowed. The buyers keep a report on each fisherman.
This is a frontrunner to limited catches per boat, similar to King Crab Fishing.
If one boat has done well the past 5 years, they will be given a larger share from now on. If another boat has had problems the last 5 years, there is no way for them to do better. Yeah, that is fair, but it is the NEW American way. What happened to work hard and reap the benefits.
I truly am fed up with everything. I've spent the working year (July on) so far working about 6 days a week, 4 in the morning to 4 or 5 at night just to pay taxes. I haven't even paid enough yet. What little I've spent has been on house payments. Out of every 3 lobsters I catch, 1 goes to taxes, and another 1/2 goes to expenses.
If it were not for Maine fishermen, lobstering would be a dead fishery, like so many others. Lobstermen instated the measure and trap vents to let shorts leave the trap. Also the V-notch. The "scientists" have tried to repeal these rules and destroy the industry but we've managed to hold them off so far.
Sorry, just pissed off. Sucks when you have a job you like, but the government just has to fix it up.
Can't wait for Hillary!, unfortunately I think she has a good chance, perhaps I can take part in the next civil war.

What think you of this? My wife & I own our piece of rural property; it's got a little creek running through it, nice & clean, year 'round. The "National Heritage Riverways Act", signed by Bill as an "Executive Order", I believe, placed 7.5 million miles of streambed in the U.S. under federal control.
This means we must abide by the rules set forth in the Act. No removal of gravel from streambed w/o federal mining permit, only certain types of vehicle may be used to cross, etc.
The county routinely gets its gravel for our roads from this creek; feds have warned them to stop. Gov't agency now vs. gov't agency.
When I built my shop building, I decided concrete block was too expensive, but that 'ole creek had a HUGE supply of brick-sized limestone rocks in it...............

The dungenes crab fishery here in Oregon already has limited entry (no. of boats in fishery) plus a limit on the no. of pots.
Each buoy HAS to be branded with a number issued by big bro.
The handbasket is alive and heading south at a tremendous rate!

First they put a limit on traps here. Set it at 800, it seemed more of a goal to achieve than a limit. Only a few fishermen were tending over 800, but now every fisherman has 800. Then to compensate for that screwup they put a limited entry plan into effect. But it is was too late. There are now more fishermen with more traps than ever before. The lobster fishery is still strong and can survive but can't if the gov't doesn't stop messing around.
They don't understand that a small rule change, like a measure change can take 15 years to really note the effects, but after 2 years they will change it again because it didn't work overnight.
We also have to have our license number on all buoys and traps. Also the buoy must have a 600 pound breakaway to save whales. The problem is the whales do not get entangled in Maine waters. But we feel the pain because the tankers that hit the whales have more financial backing.
Now to save the whales we've never caught they want us to get rid of float rope. Will be impossible to fish downeast without it.

Regulation = Fed income & control. I'm too old to see what is to come but the working man (no matter what color his collar) is being squeezed to a breaking point. The taxes & social programs (give-aways) are out of control. My sons MIGHT survive but at this point I wish I didn't have any grandkids. 0 -

Your sentiments make me feel better about not having had any kids, myself. My folks, friends, & relatives always told me over the years that I would regret it, when I get old. Now I'm old. But thinking back, I always felt that if I had a child, I would be doing him/her a disservice because I was selfish and valued the wife's & my freedom to take off for Vegas, do whatever we wanted at the time, etc.
Now, I see more and more that Americans' apathy is so widespread, especially among young adults I've had contact with (I taught high school Math a year 2002-2003), that I cannot imagine to what extent the socialization efforts controlling American freedoms will eventually lead.0 -
