ANTIOCH, Calif. -- It looked like a perfect target for a pair of alleged copper bandits, but while the abandoned Antioch warehouse had plenty of copper wiring it also held a big surprise for them.
Authorities said James Ayers, 26, of Bethel Island and Frederick Guilliee, 38, of Antioch were quickly arrested after breaking into the building at about 6 p.m. Tuesday. The reason for their quick apprehension was simple -- the building was being used by the Antioch police K-9 unit for a training session.
And at first, the police had no idea there had been a break-in.
As part of the training, an officer hid inside the 40,000-square-foot building that formerly housed a cardboard-processing plant. Then a K-9 officer called out -- as they would during an actual search -- that a dog was about to be released and that whoever was inside should surrender.
But it wasn't just the hidden officer who came out. Ayers also walked out and surrendered. Police then searched the building and Guilliee was taken into custody.
Both men were arrested on suspicion of commercial burglary.
