FTF transfer? Update

I just sold a rifle here on GB and the buyer wants to do a FTF. The buyer is an in state person so I know FTF is legal but I have a few questions. Of the few guns I have sold they have been to people I know or gone through and FFL. What is the most common way to make sure you are not selling it to someone that is not allowed to own them, or is this even my problem? How do I "get it out of my name" or if I am ever questioned about the gun prove I sold it? I have no problems with FTF.

The subject of the FTF was brought up in such a way that it makes me a little curious.

Buyer: "I live in XXXX, when will you be here next".

Me: "I live on the other side of the state". Explain where I live and how far away. "Are you looking to do a FTF"?

Buyer: "Would like to do private if possible".

Me: More info about how far away I live. "I do require positive ID even on FTF, DL
preferred, just for my files. I am sure you can
understand that". Offer for him to make suggestions.

Buyer: Offers one line for meeting. " I think its kind of strange you keep copies of people you sell to, Ive been buying 20 years and never seen that from private seller. Dont you think thats odd"?


Something about this deal seems kinda off to me but maybe I am wrong. I know some people are not good at emails but the more we talk the worse I feel. Buyer is a NR, I know we all have to start somewhere. Any suggestions would be great.

    run away from this deal now...even if this nut gives one negative feedback your rebuttal will be understood by all...i have called ahead for private pickup instate with full list of name, address, phone, ID, etc, but go thru ffl transfer upon close of deal...do it right

    This just sounds worse all the time. At this point in time I would ONLY go through an FFL, and keep a shotgun close by at home because this guy sounds strange and not someone you want to deal with.

    I have not heard back from him yet but I am to the point I am going to risk the bad feedback. If I have not heard from him tomorrow, when I get home to deal with this, I will be filing non paying bidder and relisting the gun. Thanks for the help and I will post updates.

    If you contact the bidder and ask to bypass GB, you're cutting GB out of the loop in terms of the auction fees. Complete the sale online. Work with the seller to arrange a transfer. If it's legal and your seller agrees, GB doesn't care how the transfer takes place....so long as the auction goes through them.

    18 to own one given to you as a gift, but 21 to purchase.

    Does this vary, state-by-state ??

    Doug, the GCA of 1968 states that an FFL cannot sell a handgun to anyone under 21, however anyone between 18 and 21 can purchase a handgun from non-licensed sellers in the secondary market.

    On a more serious note, here in Illinois the seller(only)of FTF trans must keep records of who he sells to for 10 years. Also FTF trans doesn't have to be reported to the state.
    Me I make up a general bill of sale,check FOID cards make copies for both parties and I keep records of who I buy from for ever.
    Never know if you just bought a gun used in a crime and just have to say "I bought this from so and so but didn't get a bill of sale cause it's not required". You'd be in deep then...[:(]

    If that firearm can come back, (as in used in a felony), to me, you better believe that I will know who received it from me. When the ATF visits him or her, that will be thier problem.
